After calling most resellers i have found that they always include Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Woks, McAfee and paint Shop Pro basic edition. Why on earth must I pay such crap and why there is no option to substract that money?

How much is all that software respect to the laptop price?

You certainly could get a barebones like an Asus without any software at all. Then just buy a copy Windows or install Linux if you want to be different.

Why not? Asus are well built machines and there are very good resellers like ProPortable or DiscountLaptops to name a couple. The X700 is probably as good as you are going to get though.

hmm... what does it supposed to mean? hmmmmmm?
you have something against Linux, you think that Windows crap is better? :p

hehe im jokning ^^; but I dont like the idea that Windows is included everythwere... at least they could give home edition - its 90usd cheaper, and if im not going to use it anyway (i can run games also under linux, so windows is totally obsolete), its allway 90usd in my pocket

I am in favour of linux, and if i had to use windows will use pro instead of home. If you want to play games there is Unreal tournament 2004 that is amazing, more even that quake series, an is fully compatible with linux, windows and mac!. The price? 20$ or 15€ :)

It all comes down to profitability. Laptop pricing is, obviously, intensely competitive in a saturated market and the markup on software (as well as being able to have the appearance of offering "more" than the competition, since the well-informed consumer will already know that 60% of the laptops produced come from three companies) offers more profit to the reseller.

I think some laptops sold in Germany come with linux. But on the other hand, most laptop buyers don't know jack about computers, and if it didn't come with stuff preinstalled they would be lost. and besides how else could Dell make money?

Have you ever seen software like "Works" listed on a Sunday "Sale" laptop price?

You pay for the OS, and laptop. If you get Works, 60/90 day limited Virus scan, and any image editors, you are lucky, and stop crying. They dont have to "give" you anything.

I think that would be great if you could save all that "extra software" money.

@Sept1967 of course they do not have to give me anything BECAUSE I AM ALREADY PAYING FOR IT.

@gecko can you post the URLs where could I get those germany laptops without windows soft and other tax? I have been looking here http://mcelrath.org/laptops.html but i have to import from the united states.

I'm sure you could get an Asus wherever you are. Then install whatever flavor of linux you like.
