So, Who's side are you on?

Basiacally I'd like to know who is still using XP and who has switched to Vista, and who is living the good life with Linux or OSX.
EDIT:I don't need to know all the OS you are running, just the main one, though if you feel the need I guess there's no har in it.

 

I'm using everything except Vista at the moment. I marked Linux because... I admire Linux. I just use the other two.

Well, stil use XP for some stuff on my Mac. I'll avoid Vista like the plague until they get SP1 out. I use 2k3 for my oracle server on campus (test stuff) and Linux for my file server at home.
I almost put Windows MCE on my linux box so I could have all my media stremed to my 360, but then I got it working on my Mac and don't need too :-D

but is this the right area for this? I mean, you're under the windows os section, so you'll see more posts in regards to xp. I think this should be moved to OT...

After using Vista for a bit on our iMacs on campus (we're running tests as we're replacing all PCs with tri-boot imacs) and I have to say it's pretty, but definently not ready for prime time. They're are too many bugs, driver issues, and security holes for it to have bee released. It still is in damn RC1/RC2 phase from the feel of it and the info I've seen around. XP is still MS's best OS to date.

Running Sabayon Linux 3.26 as my primary OS. For the rare thing I cant get to work in Sabayon, I still have XP Pro on my disk.

I'm not sure it's sides per-se, but I'm running Ubuntu 6.10 and slowly trying to get out of using XP. I refuse to goto Vista because it's too expensive and more bloatware from Microsoft, now that user friendly and usable Linux distributions are out I'll use those instead.

 

Voted XP. I have Vista but it basically just sits and acts up. Waiting for it to get better.

 

I have XP, I actually have a copy of Ubuntu, I just never got around to using it. I may DL Ultimate32bit just for fun but I won't get Vista as a main OS until I'm forced to.

 

I run Ubuntu 6.10 on all my machines, except for my laptop, which dual-boots to XP, because I like playing C&C:ZH with my friends, and Wine doesn't support it doing networking. Stupid program still uses IPX/SPX for discovery and such, you have to manually force it to use TCP networking.

I'm giving up DX10 and later games rather than go to Vista.

 

XP. Admittedly slow on the uptake, I've just had Fear, Oblivion and a Razer DeathAdder mouse arrive 3 days ago. Finally installed everything today after putting if off. Got some catching up to do! (a little subtle maybe for the relevancy to this thread... or maybe not)

I've tried Linux many many times but keep coming back to Windows. As great as Linux is, the various distros I've tried don't suit ME. To each his own

I'd really like to use linux, but sticking with xp is just so much more convenient. I'll probably switch eventually.

 

I honestly see Vista as the end of software and computer "ownership" as we have known it. MS is on the RIAA DRM bandwagon BIGTIME. In the future expect to MS REQUIRE a valid subscription to their OS or it will stop working. They are moving toward the telco/cable provider model for software...and Vista is the major move in that direction.

Face it nothing will stop Hanna Q. Housewife from just buying a PC even if she has to pay a monthly "service fee" to use it...we already do that with out TV's, phones, etc...

But many at MS have had a ****-** for such a move for years. Now with that idiot Ballmer in charge it will happen sooner rather than later.

So I will stick with XP as longer as I can keep it patched and running, after that I might just give up computers for good or re-visit Linux/whatever-ix...

I voted Vista, but i'm still using both. Vista isn't quite ready for my main PC, but running great on my laptop. I remember installing XP when it first came out back in 2001 and i had way more problems with that transition than i have had with Vista. You either go along with the growing pains, or you wait...

 

I voted Linux, of course.

Vista just isn't ready for desktop use, IMHO. And Ubuntu 6.10 is just easier than Windows XP.

I'm still running XP & Ubuntu.

I had Vista on my notebook too, but it made no sense to keep it on having the driver problems I was having.

Until I get a new Notebook, I'm sticking with XP.

I thought about putting Vista on my desktop, but it only has 1GB and I really don't see Vista as a "must have" OS yet.

 

Dual booting XP and Vista. I'm really disappointed with the drivers for Vista at this point, and I'm not sure if it's MS or the third party developers. My RICOH card reader for example still doesn't work in Vista 64bit because Asus says I need to check with MS for a 64bit driver and MS doesn't have anything on their update site for my hardware. I would've thought that some kind of driver would be available by now. As a result, I'm using XP 80% of the time and Vista 20%.

 

OT, but I used some Ricoh drivers from another Dell notebook and they work great. For whatever reason they just aren't posted on my particular model. You might want to give a search and see if manually updating allows those drivers to work.

I've used Vista and couldn't tell much difference in the two honestly. I think OS 10 is more responsive and just quicker in general. Feature set, Vista is just a decent copy of 10.3. I will say Vista looks somewhat nicer, I guess, just because it's new. But when 10.5 rolls around, I believe Vista will be left sitting in the dust.

 

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 for a day already. Actually i favour XP x64 but because of driver support, i had to use XP 32bit.

 

Voted Vista. Although XP is more stable now, but all of us know that we have to go VISTA at one time in the future.

It's not a war persay, just a database of who favors(sides) with what OS for there daily use. In other words, it's somewhat of a popualrity poll as well as a comparison of the quality of each OS based on user opinion.

 

I use XP and would like to get a computer w/ Mac OSX sometime. It's not worth it to get Vista now, if at all (but I'm sure it will be eventually). I don't have the money to get Vista or another ram upgrade for my notebook to get to 2GB. I won't be getting Vista anytime soon. I hope to use Linux sometime in my life rather than just through live CDs. I don't want to install it on my notebook, and I don't have any desktops that would really handle PCLinuxOS or Freespire.

 

I don't think it is. A fight requires at least 2 viable contenders. So far OS X and LINUX together don't come close to either XP or Vista alone.

 

Well so far my transition with Vista have been positive. In few days i have the problem with drivers, but the Lenovo website feed them with complete drivers after that.

Contrary to some comments here i did not find any lags, slow downs, hang ups, etc under Vista. Everything runs stable and fast with core duo system.

And oh, MS Office 2007 is still the best office program that i ever tried. With its black theme, it match perfectly with Vista theme.

 

I purely run Ubuntu 6.10 - soon it will only be 7.04 when the Beta release comes out in a week.

Because, in my opinion, it's the other way around.

Linux/BSD > OS X > XP > Vista

As of this weekend I'm dual-booting Ubuntu Linux 7.04 Herd 5 and XP. I'll avoid Vista forever hopefully. By the time SP1 comes out I'm hoping I'll be independent enough to be running only Linux, but we'll see how that goes.

 

If you go by the numbers, Dell~HP>every other brand of laptop.

Came out on the 2nd I believe. From all reports, it seems a lot more stable than Herd 4. It's shaping up nicely!

Vista. I'm running Ultimate and I like it a lot. There's a few bugs and software hiccups it's a brand new OS. I'm going to install XP on another partition until VPN for work and Quicken 07 work with Vista.

 

Well, I'm sportin the Dell, too. I was just trying to say that numbers don't mean anything when it comes to people's opinions... opinions aren't fact and thus aren't right or wrong, no matter what the numbers say.

Yeah, it came out not too long ago. It is quite stable, but I miss a few things from Herd 4. But it's a great OS and I look forward to it. This is by far the best OS in terms of features and usability I have ever used... seriously.

Good luck with that. I'm not sure how it'll work, but I don't think it will be good installing XP after Vista. You'll probably some kind of thrid-party bootloader otherwise you may not be able to boot into Vista after you install XP. It will work the other way around, but I've heard that you can't install older Windows OS' after newer ones. The older Windows will overwrite the MBR and not recognize the new OS.

 

Wow, thanks for the warning. I had not read that but then again I wasn't really looking. I'll do more research before attempting the install.

Perhaps I'll just keep Vista and hold off on using Quicken for a while. If physical banks still exist and there are actually people inside of them I'll go in and ask one of the employees for one of those old paper "check book registers" we all used back in the 20th century. I'll then try and find one of those ink sticks I sometimes see old people making words on paper with and I'll track my finances manually. This is assuming I still have my abacus I can find a match to light a candle.
