I have a folder with a few hundred documents. Every time I open it something happens for 10-20 seconds. During this time there's a progress bar that goes across the top of the screen where the folder path is.

When it's done the contents of the folder are correct. Before it completes the newer files are missing.

Does anyone know what is happening and how to fix it so that when I open the folder the contents are immediately correctly displayed?

Try creating a new folder and moving files over one at a time and see if you can find the problem file.

I finally found information on web that solved my problem.

Under the folder type I changed the folder properties to Optimize this folder for General Items and all is good now.
