On startup, is it normal for there to be a 20 second pause at the Dell bios screen? The status bar fills 90% almost immediately and then hangs for almost 20 seconds. After that the dvd drive makes some noise and Vista begins to load.

Bios A09 and vista home premium x64, same thing happened with x86.

Neither BIOS A08 or A09 did that for me [x86 or x64]. It's not normal I would think.

not normal. i have bios A09 and it usually only takes roughly 15 seconds to startup (from pressing power button, entering hard drive password, fingerswiping, and getting to desktop)

Adam, jump to the Windows OS forum, check out the Sticky thread there and see if any tip' there help (IMHO, a few points there should help you)...

PS., to the Mods, can you please move this thread to the Windows OS forum? The OP would benefit a lot with this discussion there. Thanks.

My Dell does the same thing. If you go into the BIOS and turn off the full boot testing and set it to minimal. 4 GBs of memory takes a while to test.

Yes that is quite fast...I wouldn't had believe him if I didn't witness this for myself w/ a Dell PC I had recently re-installed XP on from .Vista (I was thinking to myself this is booting like an SSD)...In the BIOS there should be a setting to enable Fast Boot or something like that.

vista ultimate 32bit here, consistent boot up time of 20-25 seconds, power button on to desktop / open firefox.

and I did nothing special, just followed Les' guide and try to keep system clean. and fwiw, I still have around 60 services starting up auto or auto-delayed, since I need them. other are manual start.

It takes me about 25 seconds to get to the log in. Then again reboots are FAR and few. It takes about 0.7 secs to resume.

I have seen this with both systems I have, it does not happen that often, but when it does that some times it take few minutes to finish booting the BIOS

    Thanks :)

The admin/system/bios/HDD password has not bee set but I have disabled it for restart/resume.

This did not seem to have any effect.

Hmm I do not see a "boot testing" menu. The only menu that has the option of selecting "minimal" is the Fast Boot, which is set to minimal by default.

I performed some of the tweaks in that stickied thread which has greatly improved the Vista loading however my initial boot from the DELL screen still takes the same amount of time. The DELL screen appears for 24 seconds and then 28 seconds to load to the finger print/logon screen. So 52 seconds total, which isn't long but the initial boot bothers me.

    0. My dell xps m1530 boots up from power button to desktop about 1:30, and after that the PC is really not ready for use, it is very very very slow. And after about 30 sec, it is possible to use it, i mean opening documents and browsers etc.
My xps bootup should be faster than that, don't you guys think.
    2.0ghz dual core 2, nvidia 8600m gt, 2x2gb of ddr2 ram etc

I am using windows xp pro SP3.

    1. The main problem comes out after the windows loads. Then comes up the user control( chsoosing user typing password etc ) i choose the user ( there is only 1 user by the way`= and that's me ), i type the password, and after pressing enter, it loads about 25-30 sec to the desktop, and after that it is not yet useable, very slow.

    2. By the way, when PC bootsto dekstop, then my wireless is also not connected, how can i make this so, that when in desktop, then wifi is already connected..

I desperately need some help, how to faster the boot up.
    Waiting for response.

Here is a video taken from my cell phone of my 1530 booting. I have disabled several services as well as most of the other tweaks in the NBR vista tweak thread...
