It's available at our school this coming week at a price of next to nothing. It's Windows 7 Ultimate and it's available in 32 or 64 bit (I'll be getting 64, obviously).

I'm using Vista Business 64 bit right now and like it.

    So, should I upgrade?

    Thanks!

Hell yes you should upgrade. It's amazing, and the taskbar is really nice to use. There are features that are more refined in 7 than in Vista, and there's just nice little quirks with the GUI that add to the whole experience.

However, you can get the free RTM off MSDN or Technet.

If you can get it for less than $50, then of course you should go for it. Even if it is more than that its still worth it.

Question: as of now, all they have is the upgrade version. Is this the same or worse? I really hope they get the stand alone version in...

With an upgrade version I believe you have to do a few tweaks in order to clean install. There's a guide for it somewhere on NBR

I don't like UPGRADE method of installing Windows 7.
1st, I think it won't be as clean and as stable as CLEAN installation.
    2nd, it takes longer time.
3rd, what the point? Since Vista's Driver/Application(majority) can works on 7.

YEP! Windows 7 is worth to buy!

Do you do anything graphical on your system? One of the major upgrades of Windows 7 is the fact that the graphics pipeline is now non-locking, so you can use multiple windowed GL/DirectX applications without them slowing everything down. If you can get it cheap, it is definitely an upgrade from Vista, and Ultimate is most certainly a step up from Business.

Watch this thread and look at the poll results. Almost nobody voted less than 8. Did you change your mind yet?

You can do a custom (clean) install with the upgrade disc.

but no one seems to know the exact details of how it works, especially if you have an OEM vista 64 install.

Whenever I need to buy something, I always ask myself this question. If say, I was thinking about buying software for $30, and a stranger came up to me and said he would buy the software off my hands for $30 right as I walked out the door, would I keep the software or take the $30?

Basically, the software has to be worth more than $30 to me for the purchase to be considered.
