Not sure if this goes here or in the Networking and Wireless forum, but anyways...

In Windows 7, would having a shared folder enabled create any sort of security risk when connected to a public (coffee shop) network?

hmm unless you have explicitly enabled everyone access to the folder its ok
because for someone to access to the shared folder they need a user account

if you right click on the file/folder, then Properties, then Sharing tab, then Share button, you can see who has access. check a public folder, you will see ''Everyone'' has access = not safe place. your own shares should not include everyone. also, you as a user, to log in, should have safe password.

Even if you give everyone access to that folder, they'll only have access to that folder.

So in essence, if that folder is expendable, then your system is safe.

when you connect to a coffee shop network, the networking system asks you if it's a private, business or public network. if you choose public, nothing will get shared.
