    Hi

I've got a couple of issues that I think are related but am having problems resolving them.

Firstly, I'm running Vista Home Premium x64. I've had no issues for ages up until now, everything running smoothly. I've not installed any programs, or made any major changes to my system.

Basically turn on the machine, and a security error mesage comes up, no AV Running, Avira Premium opened and running, so vista not picking it up, also it says windows defender is not running, so i turn this on and it stays on, but when I reboot it switches itself off again, so i decide to see if there are any windows updates recently. There was a definition update yesterday, so I thought this maybe the issue.

This is where I run into my second problem. I go to System Restore to restore before this update, but it starts, runs for a minute or so then I get the error message:

So I look up the error code and tried a fix which was around resetting the repositry, but no use, and all the other fixes i've found concerning the above error code are for making a restore point, not restoring the system. I then tried system restore in safe mode and this worked, but it hasn't solved my original issues with my AV and windows defender, and system restore still won't work in normal mode, still get the error above.

I've tried a Malwarebytes scan, nothing, and also an Avira scan and nothing.

I'm really baffled, so if anyone has any help or suggestions fire away.

    thanks

I've managed to get vista to pick up the anti virus and defender, but the system restore still won't work, stating the error above, and it won't create a restore point, giving the same error as above.

Thanks for that +1 rep, pretty much figured out whats wrong, so according to that site, I have some driver issues. So I can do 2 things:

    1. Re-install the chipset software.

    2. If above fails, re-install Vista (Which I result don't want to do)!!!!!
