I have an m17x (specs below) on its way and am wondering what security software i should use to protect it. I have never bought such a high-end computer before and know some security apps slow down game performance. Any recommendations would be appreciated, thanks!

I meant in terms of a product such as Norton 360 or McAfee, i will most likely purchase it from Best Buy. That thread deals with free security solutions, or did i miss part of it?

    1. Why pay for something when you can get it for free.
    2. There are links in that thread to other, similar ones that include the for-pay software.

In general, i believe in "you get what you pay for." Ive never really thought free security software would protect a computer as well as something like Norton or McAfee. So what is suggested for the best protection compared to minimal performance-slashing?

Don't you dare put norton on the m17x. I will find you.

    AVG is good,
CA Anti virus is better, and is what M$ uses.
Kaspersky is the best out there, written by ex-IBM guys, it is the uber anti virus software. I have minimal negative performance impact (compared to the atrocity that Norton is), and functions well with a "gaming mode" which minimizes the programs activity and only monitors the game, freeing up resources while keeping you protected.
