I try to maintain my computer in such a way that, even if somebody stole it, they couldn't steal my personal information or access my various online accounts.

That said, I currently use Thunderbird to download and archive my e-mail, which is totally unsecured. Somebody couldn't get into my e-mail accounts with it, but they could read through all my stored messages. So here is my question, is there a plug in or Thunderbird alternative that stores archived messages in an encrypted format or some such? Or is my security goal just unrealistic?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

If you want encryption, use TrueCrypt to make a container that you will store your files in.

Yes, well I have AxCrypt already and can do much the same thing with it. But that would require me making and updating an archive of messages on a daily basis. Further, it would take away my ability to search previous messages, etc..

That is, unless the software you recommend has some features that allow for dynamic encryption/decryption of files used by another program (which I've never seen--but if it exists I want it).

Just open the container before you start the program and have your messages stored in that directory.
