Hm, I'm wondering if there's a company that lets you register domain and has a better protection for it. Like requiring some scanned documents to register, and if you decide to transfer the ownership, it shouldn't be as easy as recieving a confirmation email and clicking Confirm... :(

All the companies that offer domain name registration are using the same method because they just act as agents between you and VeriSign (for .com and .net) or other registration company.

The transfer method is dictated by VeriSign and they just require a EPP code.

my godaddy accounts all have an extra layer of 'protection' on them that prevents hijacking and protects me a bit from stupid misconfigs or forgetting to re-register. I haven't looked but I'm sure that competent registrars all have a premium level of registration that offers additional protections.

At godaddy, this costs me an extra $5 a year for 5 domains and their web pages and email addresses.

Except that extra layer can easily be disabled by anyone with access to your godaddy account (ie: someone with the access to your nameserver settings to hijack the site in the first place).
