Ive found that the Search Indexer, Search Filter Host and Search Protocol Host have at times, been crushing my CPU.

Ive turned the indexing completely off but now I realize whats missing; searches take much longer in both the C drive and in Outlook.

Ive heard that the Index constantly sends and received info from Microsoft-which may be the main culprit for slowing down my cpu.

Is there a way to JUST turn that off but leave the index function on?

I don't buy these rumors you've been hearing. Just doesn't add up. I can't see why the indexing process (or the index) would send info to Microsoft... and even if it did, I can't see why that would use a lot of CPU.

Indexing itself uses the CPU... for the few hours it takes to index everything... but once it's indexed your files, it shouldn't need to use much CPU at all anymore. According to Task Manager, it's using 0% of my CPU right now. (I don't use Outlook though.)

Turn search indexing on, let it index a while and see if the CPU usage dies down. If it doesn't then something's not working right.

Might have some effects on the CPU, but not "crushing" :) Have you looked at your task manager and see what processes that were munching on cpu usage?

How much longer is longer? Usually it is very minimal to even notice it.

    Agreeing with swarmer above.

:) as above, dont panic over nothing.

    cheers ...

I have to run with indexing for my HTPC set up, Indexing is critical to Media Centre with TV Pack.

Indexing does take a reasonable chunk of processor power when it is just starting to index but after that it only kicks in for 10-20s a day and does not "clog things up". Indexing will turn itself off if you start doing heavy work on the PC. It also does not send all its data back to MS, it stores it in a set of folders that can be quickly looked through rather than having to search the whole disc when looking for stuff.

If you want to disable searching without actually disabling it, Just go to indexing in control panel and remove any directories that you don't want indexed. Removing them all means it will build an index file and then stop without putting anything in it.
