I have a Samsug R60 around 2 years old. The hard disk has crashed. So I need to reinstall Vista but Samsung don't provide the media with the laptop. Their customer service system is dreadful but they eventually pointed me to a 'partner' web site. The recovery CD is £25 + £8 postage + £1.50 debit card fee + vat (over £40).

Is there any way round this? I may as well buy Windows 7. I would need to buy the full version of course because the upgrade won't work as I have no Vista install or media!

I don't think those help for a reinstall. You're short on options here.

I'd first call back Samsung and tell their CS to go themselves and that you'll steer people away from their products in the future. Secondly, in the Windows 7 section, you'll notice a thread for download links to get 7 images (sans license keys). The thread mentions that at least at one point, these images were also available for Vista. I'd try hunting down those old Vista links - perhaps they still work. You'll likely have an OEM key sticker on the bottom of your laptop that will allow you to install from such an image, though you may need to activate over the phone.

Otherwise, bite the bullet and buy media.

    The Vista License is OEM.
Your BIOS has the Vista Activating Code so you can use a Retail vista installation and activate it using the OEM License.
Or you can get back at them by modifying the vista code to activate Win7 as well...but risky
