Hi I am having some concerns regarding the svchost.exe. Now I'm not sure if I'm on the right track but this is what happened.

I did a system restore. Everything went fine the comp booted up and loaded the settings. I noticed though that the hard drive activity light kept blinking and the system became somewhat slower. So I reversed/undid the restore and went back to the original setting. But the problem of the activity light blinking didn't go away. Before when I would boot the light would start of blinking but then it would become normal but now it just constantly blinks..another thing i noticed is that the fan's constantly on as well. I went into task manager and the overall cpu usuage is normal (<10 percent) when the system is idle eventhough though the activity is constantly blinking.

In the task manager there are many instances of svchost application. however there is one that is at close to 100,000K in terms of its memory (private working set). Now when i end process this one application the activity light becomes normal but the fans still running..I guess my question is if I should do something about this situation and if so what can I do.

    thanks

    Max

multiple svchost.exe processes running are okay; of course, malware can attempt to pretend that it's a legitimate process by using this name, but not necessarily in this case. i'd suggest to use Process Monitor to find out more about this particular svchost.exe.

and a note about the HDD activity & blinking... try checking this thread, i thought i'd go mad because of the constant blinking. the solution which helped me is in post #35, however i'm not really sure if it's the same issue.

ok so the blinking stopped i guess i was wrong..i just had to wait longer but i notice that the fans kicks up a notch when the temp of the HHD goes over 38 deg cel. and then it just pretty much stays on at that level..not noisy but u can hear it. so is this normal. i mean should it start and then after a while go down a notch..or should it just stay at the same level...
