While I was watching the Big Bang Theory (white asparigus triangulation season 2 episode 9) where sheldon was shouting animal sounds in the theatre to find the perfect acoustics spot, and when he finaly found it (crawled up closely to leonard) and heard the THX sound he said: Oh yeah, this is it.

So, I was wondering if it was possible to replace the Windows start up sound (plingeling ling ling) by the THX sound. So everytime my laptop boots up for another gaming session, I can say: Oh yeah, this is it ^^

For the people not knowing the orginal THX sound (i.e. not the one with the cows), here's a link to youtube.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWkJ86JqlPA

edit: Here's the simpsons parody on the sound for the people interested http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3_HHZFi0As&feature=related

Basicly thats the effect I want :p

    Edit2:
Ok I tried doing this myself first, and I failed. This is what I did: I went to windows and clicked on media. There you find most windows sounds. I could not find the windows boot up sound, but I did find the logon sound and tried replacing that with the thx sound. I removed the original logon sound, put the thx sound in the media file and renamed it exactly as the logon sound. When I did a reboot it did not work and I lost my logon 'pling' sound.

Exactly, and it would look even better if you had that sound on an Alienware system with really loud speakers so you could make your class shake with the THX soundwaves ^^

Haha, heck yes! I would slap an Alienware wallpaper as the loading logo with the THX sound effect, and boom, there ya go.

To bad I graduated 2 years ago  Lol. At least I will enjoy it, and maybe the neighbors, lol.

Well I got it to work when the desktop loads up. I kinda wanted it to play when the Windows 7 logo was starting when it loads up, but this works pretty cool.

I used this sound effect below. Was the best one I could find.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U28YgbZyGWg

And I followed these steps below.
    http://kb.iu.edu/data/ajgs.html

Let me know if anyone knows how to add the sound to when the Windows 7 logo is starting when you start up the computer instead.

+ 1 for finding those instructions. I got it to work too when the desktop is shown, I replaced the windows logon pling sound by the thx sound. I didn't find the sound when the windows logo is shown but its already pretty cool. My acer has a subwoofer and its pretty impressive, all I need now is a cool THX or Alienware background ^^

edit: You can chose to turn of the windows start up sound, so the only sound that you will hear when booting up will be the THX sound :p

No problem man. I only wish I could change it when the Windows 7 logo at the beginning is starting, but it's pretty sick the way it is now.

Especially with my Rainmeter configs all showing just at the apex of the THX sound, makes it even cooler, lol.

Pfft, if you think a laptop subwoofer sounds awesome then you should hear what it sounds like on my THX Certified Z-2300's, with it's 8" subwoofer.

It's not just the subwoofer, it's the 5.1 (or higher) that give you the true effect.

True, but just about any external speaker system 2.1 or higher is going to blow laptop simulated 5.1 sound out of the water.

Yes, since laptop speakers are about as bad as speakers can get, that's not saying a whole lot.

I decided to upload my start up AND log off sounds. If you want it Just download the 2 files (they are already .wav format), and put it anywhere you want on your computer. ( I put both under Documents/startup sound) :) I hope you guys like

Here is the THX start up Sound:

    http://www.mediafire.com/file/iw3m34dl2jj/THX

And Here is the THX log off sound:

    http://www.mediafire.com/file/5mjntnqewwo/THX

Both sounds can be a maximum of 10 seconds, but the logoff sound has to be under 4 seconds, or else when shutting down, windows waits for the sound to finish, with a message saying its waiting for it to close. To make the sounds I used adobe premiere pro, and for the logoff sound I just reversed the sound, and added some other effects.

I would also like to know how to change the sound at the windows logo, but I think this is pretty alight too.

Tell me what you guys think. I just did a quick edit because it's late, but I might tweak it tomorrow with more effects/different timing. No one has posted about editing the file, so I am assuming you already did, or you just let it end. Either way, here's mine :)

I just downloaded your THX Startup. I love it. not too long and not too short. Very good for a quick edit. I have terrible laptop speakers so it doesnt do much justice but when I use my headphones it sounds pretty good...a tad grainy but that could be my audio chipset haha... Good Job!

    Thanks, glad you like it.

Both sounds are @ 1536Kbps, which should be amazing quality (The startup sound is 10 seconds, and 1.2MB, so that is really high quality). (good music files are usually @ 320Kbps)

I just blasted it using my real 5.1 surround sound I use for my home theatre setup, and It sounds clear to me (It also shook the house :))

    Anyway glad you like it.

just retested it....you are right...AMAZING SOUND QUALITY. Hooked it up to my Pioneer HTIB and it was awesome. My headphones werent plugged in all the way the first time around which is why it sounded a little grainy but after I plugged them in all the way....perfect for a startup sound

Is there a way to allow it to play a complete song at startup. I converted a MP3 to a Wav and it will only play the first few seconds.

I haven't tried, but I'd try creating a task in Task Scheduler. (I would just play the .mp3 file, if you do that.)

fyi, my windows logon sound which I replaced with the THX sound effect is longer than 10 secs, its 12 seconds ^^ I haven't tried a longer startup sound yet though, but I think its not limited.

It will play the 12 second THX both at start up and at shutdown. I have XP Pro and am playing around with different sounds. I took the original youtube video and converted it with Zamzar online file conversion so that work just fine.

Okay well I think it was 10 seconds, but it could be 12 seconds, either way its not unlimited because it does just stop the sound after a certain amount of time.

As for the shutdown sound, IF it is longer than 4 seconds, A message comes up saying that it is waiting for windows explorer (shutdown sound) to finish. A message comes up asking if you want to force shut it down or not ( Im sure everyone has seen this message when something is left open while trying to shut down).

It might be okay for windows xp, and maybe even vista, but for windows 7 ultimate, the startup sound is limited, and the shutdown sound is limited to 10 or 12 seconds as well, but you do not want it on longer than 4 seconds, or else it hangs your shut down, waiting for it to finish.

It stops the sound at logon i think? You can always just use the sound as logon sound instead, which is easier to change and it can be longer.
