Im going to try out kaspersky as i have heard good things about it in the past... i have a hardware firewall via router... but i am curious whether it is worth spending the extra $20 and getting the KIS or just go the KAS...

Can you disable things you dont want eg. firewall... and essentially have a working copy of KAV? or does installing KIS dig deeper into your system?

im fine with just getting KAV but figured for an extra $20 i can have the other stuff incase i decide to test it out... only as long as it doesnt slow me down further...

also considering NOD32 (Eset)? heard some good stuff about that too..

ps. is there a good guide on completely removing Norton Internet Security 2007? I want to uninstall and then test out the trial version of a few of these AV's... tried google but couldnt find a decent guide on registry edits etc...

Actually, Norton should uninstall just fine through the Add/Remove panel.

If it doesn't, you can download and run Symantec's uninstall app here:

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

As far as which flavor of Kasperskey, you have a couple of options:

    1. The K anti-virus along with free ZoneAlarm works just fine.

    2. The Kasperskey suite does includ anti-spam, and anti-spyware apps as well. It works OK. Until the protection system "learns" what's safe and what isn't, the pop up window asking for authentication can get annoying. After about 3 months of use, I very rarely get one any more.

If you're concerned about Norton leaving behind registry entries, I'd recommend either JV16 Power Tools ( www.macecraft.com) or Toni Arts Easy Cleaner ( www.toniarts.com). Easy Cleaner is free and less invasive. JV16 is very powerful (free to try, I think) and you can potentially mess things up. It does allow you to backup your changes in case there are problems later.
    Hope this helps.

One thing about Norton and McAfee products is that they don't like to be removed. I've run into problems uninstalling both companies' programs in the past. In case the Symantec unistall application doesn't work for you, give their tech support an email/chat. They have a packet of mini-apps you can run to remove the bits and pieces left over from your registry.

Perhaps something like CCleaner can do this as well, but Symantec's will be custom-made to do this.

I personally recommend the NOD32 from Eset. I have it myself and it is an excellent anti-virus. Much less resource intensive than Norton. I haven't used Kapersky before but I've heard they are good too. Either way, you won't lose out from switching out of Norton :)
