Hi.
Curently I am using windows xp he. I was just wondering if i could somehow remove the bootmanager that is aded when I install another OS(linux or vista), and then uninstall it by formatting its partition, so it doesn't ask me everytime i start my laptop which OS to choose.

FIXMBR via the XP disk recovery console plus some switches does the trick for XP.. it restores the XP Master boot record on the start up drive (or drive of your choosing depending on switches). I used that command when I deleted the contents of my linux partition once forgetting about GRUB which was on my linux partition.

The problem is that i have a ''personalized'' instalation dvd. It is a copy of the recovery partition that came with my laptop(made with the program supplied by packard bell)

Do you know anyone with an XP disk? It's not as if you are reinstalling Windows you just need to get to the recovery console and as far as I'm aware that's the only way (boot up with XP disk in).
Other than that you could try pressing f8 on start up to get to the advanced boot menu then go to safe mode with command prompt and try FIXMBR from there, but I'm not sure if CMD will recognise it, it might just be a recovery console command. -
A friend of mine has xp, but it's the professional edition. Does it matter?
And that's it? fixmbr and all is fixed? -
any XP disk should do the trick.
"If you do not specify a device_name (ie just type fixmbr), a new master boot record will be written to the boot device, which is the drive on which your primary system is loaded."
It's worked for me in the past, and your problem sounds very much like the one I had. I'd check the link in my earlier post, just to see if it sounds right to you first! If it does then yup fixmbr will restore your XP master boot record and will boot you straight into XP.
*edit.. if there's a delay in any more replys from me it's because I'm about to drop my car off at the garage but will get back to you later!! -
OK, thanks for the help. I'm not going to do this now because i won't install another OS yet, i just wanted to know in perspective.
Thx again and bye
