    Hello,
I am running an old desktop (check my signature for specs). I kinda want to get it up and running as it should. I want to do a total clear of all things on the HDD and then reinstall Windows. Now how should i do this? Has XP got the a backup option or something like that?
    Thanks!

My recommendation is to make a list of the apps you will want when the reinstall is done, and be sure to have those installers ready to go. Back up all your data (typically c:\documents and settings\<user>\*.*) Then wipe out the hard drive, install XP from your XP install media, then do all updates, then create your user and copy your documents back, and reinstall your apps.

How would it help to make a complete backup and reinstall it, you would not have a clean install.
The best way to go here is to aquire the correct Windows XP CD, and do a format from the cd to clean all, then do the fresh reinstall. Keep in mind that you need to aquire the drivers for your computer once again. They can be found here
A Windows XP cd should be leglaly downloadable somewhere on the internet, what version do you have the serialnumber for?

If you don't have the CD for the computer you have to make your own.

Method 1 - You need to backup four files from the installation: oembios.cat, oembios.bin, oembios.dat, oembios.sig. They have to be compressed before added to the iso (a stock, retail SP3 iso is the best choice). A winnt.sif file is also needed.

Method 2 - If you still have the \Windows\i386 folder you can make an iso from it. (If you still have this folder you should find the four files here, already compressed. Use these for method 1.)

I'd use the first method, because it usually works better. The latter involves using a folder that may not be complete for installation.

Tell me what you'd like to do.
