I have an old Presario 2200 that normally I wouldn't bother with, but I have some files on the computer I could use. Well suddenly for some reason it refuses to boot. It goes to the Windows XP loading screen for a while. and then I get a blue screen of death with some error message on it. It says something like "Registry cannot load the hive" and some other info, then it goes to the BIOS screen and asks which mode I'd like to start Windows in. It doesn't matter whether I start it normally, in safe mode, or with the last known good settings, the same thing happens.
I don't know if there's anything I can do by myself, the computers not worth repairing. But it would be nice to get access to those files.

If you have access to a retail Windows XP install CD just to a repair installation. If you don't have access to that than you could also use a Linux live CD such as Ubuntu to access those files. While working in Ubuntu you could transfer them off the drive by whatever method works best for you (network, usb drive, ect). Or you could remove the hard drive and use an IDE/SATA>>USB adapter to plug the drive into another computer externally. From that point you can access that drive from the computer you're using's desktop.

I do have a recovery CD but apparently my optical drive is also messed up because it boots halfway then resets. I guess I'll go the SATA cable route. Thanks.
EDIT
Ok, so I ended up creating an Ubuntu Live CD for the hell of it and it worked, so apparently it was my recovery cd that was no good. I actually like Ubuntu, I might install it on my main laptop too. Thanks again. -
I'm glad everything worked well for you. If you do consider using Ubuntu on a more permanent basis consider reading though these threads. They are great guides and helped my a lot while using Ubuntu.
