Is there any way at all for me to get the factory reset and refresh settings option in windows 8.1 working again at all?

I have a retail windows 8.1 bootable usb drive and a product key for it.

I know I don't really need the restore/refresh to work since I have that but I want to sell this laptop to a friend who's clueless with pcs so I want to make it as easy for her as possible and she always loses flash drives and written instructions.

I always get the message "some files are missing. Your windows disk or recovery media can provide these missing files" when I try to reset/refresh.

I think the reason why these options don't work is that at one point, the person who owned the laptop before me deleted the recovery partition to create more useable disk space.

I've got 4 partitions right now on my 128 GB asus ux31 touch ssd hard drive (I think I changed them too at one point but don't remember how I did it). 300 MB Health (EFI System). 600 MB Health (Recovery). 113.89 GB Health (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump). 350 MB Healthy (Recovery Partition). 4 GB Health (Primary Partition). I think the 4 GB is for my instant boot though I'm not sure.

    Thanks.

You sure the USB drive was properly created to be able to boot the laptop? That message would indicate a badly made USB recovery stick. And usually you can order the recovery CD/DVD if they make it for that laptop but since we have no details as to what kinda laptop your talking about that is harder to figure? And that should reformat back to factory install with the W8 keys in the UEFI system files but you should check with the manufacture if they had recovery dvd for that laptop to format back to factory install.

That message doesn't pop up when I stick the usb drive in. I'm wanting to not get that message without having to stick the usb drive in since my friend always loses usb drives.

I have an asus ux31a touch. They don't make recovery disks for preinstalled win 8 or above laptops anymore (at least not asus).

Ive got the same issue on my R501JR, I made a recovery usb that is the better part of 16gb and after it was finalised, windows 8.1 suggested i delete the partition to free up space. So i clean installed 8.1 and deleted all partitions in the process. I attempted to boot off the recovery usb, it boots fine. When I go to to do a "reset" though, it informs me of a missing recovery partition. So why did it say I could delete it??? And why is the usb bootable recovery image so large if I can't even factory reset with it??? I wish asus still had there own independent recovery software. This windows 8 recovery is annoying to say the least...

You might have to contact Asus and ask for help to get recovery dvd or how to restore you Windows 8 back. I do know in Windows 7 computers you had option to make or purchase recovery dvd and that when restored did create the bootable recovery image as well but in Windows 8 and Asus you might have to contact their support department and ask what happened and how to get your Windows 8 back or get restore dvd to that effect.

Yes, I think your right. It's not a big issue as windows 8.1 is actually running well. It's always good to have the factory reset option though.

Use any of the free imaging tools and create an image and put it away on a hidden partition.

You wont get that F8 recovery type capability but you have the data there and a way to restore should you ever need it.
