On my TOshiba laptop HDD failed last week, but I managed to get D: partition saved (bad sectors on boot sector).
I have not created recovery DVDs and was not supplied with any Vista DVDs.
I cannot create OEM disc because a friend of mine ereased C: partition and all other files,
But....
there's still hope for me (I think).
On D: there is a folder called HDDRecovery with 4 massive .swm files, which I presume create recovery DVDs. Is it possible to create DVDs that would work from these files?

-
First of all, how many GB's are these "massive" .swm files?
-
roughtly just under 1GB. However extracted with 7zip you're looking at ~10GB from 06556XSP.swm (actually you can find all drivers, c**pware, along with \boot directory).
-
Ohhhh, So they very well could be! Have you extracted them with 7zip?
-
yes I have - the first file extracted is appx 10GB in size, including \boot folder and all drivers. The remaining files extract to few hundreds of small packages nubered (I will be able to bring some more details tomorrow).

I just wanted to say: bump

What brand of notebook is this? I would suggest you post on the manufacture forum on this site. Each notebook maker uses different processes to make the recovery disks.
Edit: Ok I guess your laptop is a toshiba? Go post in the toshiba forum. Many of them will not read your post if you post here.
There should be a utility called recovery disk creator. But yours is gone since it was on C:
you can download it here I guess:
