Hello,
My laptop uses Realtek HD Audio software codec and whenever I record a sound via either my microphone or sound card input I get ALOT of noise in the background. Why is this?
Thank you

Sorry to sound like a noob, but input level where?

In control panel "sounds and audio devices" click, now in "sounds and audio devices properties" 3rd Tab "audio" click, sound recording click volume, is your mic volume slider very low?
If this gets you anywhere I can post even more and better, how you can really tell if the problem is in here not somewhere else. -

No, not really, its at about 3/4ths the way up but I can't move it, the only one I can move is the recording volume slider.

I was trying to rule out weak signal, because of that mic level but 3/4 up sounds fine, if you were only having trouble with a mic I would tell you that mic that are not pre-amped (power added) typically record with very poor quality, what else were you using? I may still be able to help.
-
If I plug a mic in I get poor quality, if I plug say an Ipod or the like in and set volume at 1/3 to ½ (of the device) then record I get good quality, can you record like this and see what the quality is. If good then I think you need a pre-amp no other problem.

My friends get it and I don't here are my reasoning to why this might happen:
1) Crappy sound card (no offense)
2) Drivers
3) software crashing on channels
My friends usually use stock internal soundcards. so I'm wondering which model of Realtek sound card your laptop is currently using. Is it 5.1 ready? It could be due to lack of channels.
Have you tried updating your audio drivers? This can often be a cause to problems.
The last one is softwares. Some audio output softwares might use up the channels use for recording (eg:Ventrilo is a big one). It will change the output so you sound weird or background sound may appear. If that's the case, try turning off all audio softwares and only have your recording software running see if that helps. -

I am using the latest drivers for my system which is powered by Realtek HD Audio but I do not know the physical model of the soundcard.
