I'm looking to get a External Drive that works well with Windows 7.

Looking for 1TB or larger. Decent speed and most importantly GREAT reliability.

Personal experiences ONLY please .... as reviews on so many other sites are so conflicting and I already had bad luck with two previous external HDs(250GB & 500GB) using Vista & XP. I had never owned a HD as large as 1TB though.

So from your experience, what would you suggest for me as a reliable external HD.

AC powered or not doesn't matter to me.

My 1TB drive is a Freecom and I have two more of their drives. They tend to be big and heavy with an aluminium case which gives the best reliability. 3.5" ac powered drives are more reliable than 2.5" ones.

External drives work with all operating systems; it's the software they come with that might of might not. Since I don't use the software I can't vouch for that.

Prices seem to have gone up recently so if I was buying today, I'd probably get a Samsung Storystation instead.

    I'm using this one
since last year and I've never had any problems with it. It's cheap and biiiiiig. And it doesn't come with any kind of software, you just plug it in and it works.

I use Seagate Free Agent Xtreme and what I like is the connectivity. It has USB, FireWire and Esata. Esata is good as it is fast and if you have Esata connector in your laptop choose a drive that has Esata. The speed difference between Esata and USB is enormous. You do not feel as if it were an external drive.

Got a WD Mybook Home 1tb...firewire / esata / USB. Works great but just one tip, don't use different types of connections on the same computer. Normally i always use the eSATA which is great but i brought it with to a friends' and forgot the cable, used an USB and somehow me laptop couldn't start or find the HDD, also didn't show up in Disk manager. After that i also wouldn't start with eSATA anymore. Did a couple restart and all was fine again. Weird but it was fixed and now i just use the eSATA only.
