    Hey guys

I am planning to do a clean install of Windows Vista Home premium
I am currently using the 32-bit factory install, and plan on going to 64-bit

My current partitions are 2 100GB partitions, and I hidden 10Gb partition

I plan on deleting all of these and creating 2 partitions

I want to know what size would be enough for the C drive
I will install only Vista, and programs on this drive (nothing big), while all games and data will be on the second partition

I want the size to be enough, while no wasting too much space (5-10GB free is ok)

    Thanks

64-bit Vista takes up a bit more space than 32-bit.

My Vista partition uses about 43 gb right now, but that includes about 5.7 gb of crap in my "Downloads" directory that you'd be keeping on a separate partition. So I'm really using around 37 gb or so. That includes about 2.8 gb of installed programs.

Of course, you'll need some breathing room... the Windows directory grows over time, and you want to be able to install as many apps as you like... I'd figure on about a 45 gb Windows partition.

40 gb would work but be a tighter fit... and 50 gb would give a bit extra breathing room and reduce the chance that you'll ever have to think about it.

64-bit Vista takes up around 20GB right off the bat. If you play games, I would recommend an 80GB partition.

Alright, thanks for the info guys,

I will install games on my D partition so that's not a problem

    I was thinking of 32GB - C and 200GB D
    Would that be enough?
My installed programs are only about a gig, and I regularly clean out older restore points, but I guess I still won't have enough??

    Maybe 45 then

My Windows dir is 21.4 gb. It grows over time. It was around 15 or 16 gb upon installation... but yours may start off bigger since you'll be installing SP2.
pagefile = default is a little more than your RAM amount, but you can shrink it if you want
hibernate file = RAM amount (i.e. 4 gb RAM = 4 gb hibernate file, or 0 gb if you shut off hibernate)
Program Files... around 3 gb on mine, maybe less on yours. It will be a few hundred MB bigger on x64 though.
Recycle Bin = 1 gb, you can shrink it though.
System Volume Info (System Restore space) = about 10 gb on mine... I think 3 gb is the minimum size, or you can shut it off and use 0 but I don't recommend that.

So... if you have 4 gb of RAM then for a 32 gb partition you'd probably have to do tweaking at some point or shut off some features like hibernate and/or system restore.

40gb should work I think. With 32gb you'll need to do tweaks or shut off features at some point, I think. With 40gb+ you should be able to leave everything on and not think about it.

    Great :D

Guess I will make it 40 and leave it, while the D drive will be 192 :D
I don't mind tweaking it, however its much easier not to have to constantly tweak, and just maintain it around once every month

    Thanks for your help swarmer
I'll format next weekend once I've got everything I need

id say 40 - 50gb sounds about right... but you can always increase it later on....
