    Hi All!

I have this huge problem trying to understand some of Win7's Power Options. Under Display, I have the following options:
    Auto Dim:
    Dim display after: 5
    Turn off display after: 5
    Dim Timer: 5
    Dim Value: 0
    Display Brightness: 100%
    Dimmed Display Brightness: 10%

What I want to accomplish is for Win7 to shutoff/turnoff Display after 5 minutes. I dont want it to dim, but to totally shutoff to reduce power consumption. And when user moves the mouse or press something on the keyboard, the machine will ask password.

From my attempts, I had to set the ScreenSaver to ask password when it entered Screen Saver mode. But what I could not get to work properly is the turning off of the screen. I got it to turn off, but after a while it goes into "dimmed" mode - blank screen but the backlight still lit.

Anyone knows how to set the Display parameters?
at WinXP, it was very simple.. with Win7 however, I could not get it to work properly.

Try to set dim time less than shut off time.

Seems that my problem is an actual Win7 problem; some people could not even get their Lappies to turn off the screen because of "possible driver" issue.

In one of my settings, I disabled ScreenSaver (Blank with password); had AutoDim 4mins, and Turnoff Display 5 mins. I left it for hours and I got a screen that is asking for password, and its not turned off...

Could you actually identify what laptop model and make you have and what O/S version you have? That would at least give others some ideas where to look on their laptop and what settings are affecting your problems to see if it is O/S or hardware problems or driver issues conflicting????

if you have the blank screensaver with 'display logon screen upon resume' (i.e. password required) set for five minutes and the display set to turn off under power options after five minutes, what happens? in other words, why did you disable the screensaver from the attempt you described in your second quote?
