It says that a port of mine is blocked and is slowing down the download rate of my bit torrent client. I have Vista Home Premium; how would i go about opening the port to increase the download rate.

    I'm using BitComet

Are you behind a router or firewall?

If you are behind a router, go to the router admin (if you has access to it), usually its 192.168.1.1 and port forward the torrent port to your computer local IP.

If you are behind a firewall, enable the torrent program in the firewall.

What I did was I went into Windows Defender and clicked "allow" or w/e for the program.

Try exsiting your virus protection complety, if it works then, then it is your your virus protection firewall blocking it. and also give KarenA idea a try.

I am behind a firewall, but the firewall is allowing it. I assume it is my router. How do i forward the port?

If it's your router, you'll need to go into the configuration page of it. http://192.168.1.1 for a lot of routers, but it varies. It depends what brand router you're using.

Yep, didn't work. I had this problem awhile ago but never knew how to fix it. I know it's my router, but i don't know how to forward the ports.

Check this site. Find the router you are using and follow the tutorial there.

You may also want to try laptop4life's idea too.

Wow, that was so much easier than i expected, thanks a lot guys everything seems to be working fine and dandy. Is there any auxilary way to check to see if my router is blocking a program, say AIM or something?

But to be clear, bitcomet is working great; thanks.
