Hello.
I have a few folders on my computer that I'd like to password protect and I'd like some of your opinions on the best software to do this.
I'd like it to be totally free or have a free version available with no time constraints or any other major limitations. As long as it is easy to use, effective, and free it's worth a shot.
I want to be able to click on the folder, enter the password, get to the files, and lock up again within a few clicks.
Thanks!

You set the password on your screensaver.
I know things, things that could get me killed
Thinkpad T41:

How do I get it to only lock one folder though? I don't want to lock the whole computer.

Try the following software to see if it meets your needs it is the only freeware that I could find:

I've tried that program. It is decent but the free version only let you protect 25 MB worth of stuff and my folder is about 50 MB.
Thanks for the suggestion nonetheless. It is decent software but I will just use the archives.

you could password protect your user files and then create other logins that for others to use that wouldn't have access to your documents&settings

Another alternative would be to password protect a .zip archive and store your documents in a zip file.
This option might be slightly slower and more of a pain to use on a regular basis though. -

You can get the full version for free, in exchange for a link. -
Wow, that's awesome. I'll have to ask my friends if they'd be down with me putting the link on our site.

Technically, the appropriate way to do it would be to assign permissions according to group or users. Then the passwording is not necessary, whoever needs to see it will have access to it automatically, or they won't have it at all. This works for all permissions and privileges on that machine, whether or not they're accessing it locally or remotely.
It's a lot simpler than having to manage a bunch of folders with a bunch of passwords. That's why it evolved that way. Before good user/group authentication existed techniques like the one you mention were used frequently...and it was ANNOYING, as well as having significant maintenence overhead when managing several items as such for multiple users...
