I have two partitions on my laptop, C followed by D. I created D by shrinking volume C. Now I want to extend volume C by shrinking D. If i use diskpart, the unallocated space sits next to D, so I'm not able to extend C. Is there something I can do to rearrange the partitions/unallocated space such that the unallocated space lies next to C?

I think diskpart's shrinking only lets you shrink by cutting off the end, not the beginning.

    So...

You could nuke D and recreate it. (Back up any data on D first, of course.)

Or... you could use another program such as gparted to move D.

Use Gnome Partition Editor this will fix your size problem and this is a .ISO file, so just put it on a CD. Boot this and then start up the first choice at the top.

Here is the Link for how to use it. Click here (Yeah it s Dual-boot read me but it the same thing)

Use this version 0.3.4-7. That's what I used. The Great thing its free and you can use it again and again.

Use the same tool on both partitions or you could have errors!

Why? I have used multiple partitioning tools on the same computer for years with no adverse outcomes. What makes you think this is an issue? Did you experience some issue with a particular pairing of tools?

The errors may not be evident unless checked with a partition information utility. On this laptop I have 4 partitions with an error on the last, on another computer with multiple partitions I had several partition errors. I was trying out different partitioning tools. Which tools I can't say for sure, except Windows, this is one of several I was using and this would be my first suspect. I'm thinking that not all partitioning utilities partition the same?

Using PartInNT from within XP shows the error on this laptop:
"Error #106: Partition didn't begin on head boundary.
ucBeginSector expected to be 1, not 4."

Interesting. Did the error manifest itself in any other way than when you ran PartInNT? What prompted you to run it? BTW what is that app???

This is the very first time I have ever heard of anyone having trouble mixing partition apps. It sounds to me like it was an issue with a particular app, though rather than mixing multiple apps. But I could be wrong there.

It displays disk geometry, Partition information, Sectors, Cylinders and etc. I started using it when I found a Web article about creating a bootable extended partition, by changing the partition parameters.

"Did the error manifest itself in any other way?"
I use Acronis to partition with now, always worked OK except for once when I was Enlarging or(?) shrinking a Pro partition with an error, partition formatting disappeared! Was it because of the error? I suspect it was but have no evidence. Haven't seen any other problems so maybe only "disk/partition/format stability" is a possibility?

Thanks. Do you have a link for PartInNT?
