I know there are a ton of questions about this and have read them, but i still have a few outstanding questions.

I am getting a new 500GB HDD for my lappy in the very soon future.
Im wondering what size partition you lads recommend for Vista 64 OS partition.
Currently on my OS partition, it is consuming 40GB or there abouts with all my favourite apps installed, no games download folder moved to other partition, etc(except MS Office 2007 Pro {God bless you Gophn for this, youre a legend}).

I want to create the program folders on my storage partition for all my programs, so that when I restore (I do this frequently having discovered Acronis True Image, and Im kind of a neat freak but thats not what im asking about :p ). I want to do this so that every time I restore, there isnt an excessive amount of updating to do for all my programs, such as antivirus, etc. Is this viable? or would it want to update anyway for some weird reason.

Im thinking about making my OS partitions about 40GB, because if I move my CS4 suite. Anything you lads suggest would be greatly appreciated!

This statement has me confused. So you want to install the programs onto a different partition than the OS? Depending on how your programs update, putting them onto a different partition may not work. Some do put some updates into system folders so if you restore, it may freak out when you go to run the app again.

40GB would be ok, it would really depend on how much you intend to install. If you're putting programs elsewhere, 40GB is quite a bit, imo. 30GB would do just fine but perhaps the extra wouldn't be so bad.

Ive had a wee bit to drink, so please forgive my rambling.
But from the sound of your answer, it seems you have gotten the drift.
But I am using a lot of portable programs to keep my computer cleaner if you will. all sorts. including ImgBurn, Ccleaner, Filezilla, FreeCommander, etc...)
Looking at my program files, I have a relatively small amount of programs installed. These programs are:
    Adobe CS4 ( Design, I'm cheap :p)
    Avira AV
    Daemon Tools
    Object Dock

Its strange that to hear that 30GB is recommended because the only real program I have on my OS partition is CS4 and I have using a wee bit more than 38GB on my OS partition.
I have allocated all my user files to my storage partition (D :) using the location line. Checking the file size of my entire user directory, it is 1.09GB.
    Where is all my space??
    Just pondering this matter...

u r using a 500gb hard drive , you can just add a 10gb more just in case u needed to install large programs in the future , like any other program of the adobe suit collection , id say go for a 50gb for the windows drive

Late, but I vote to give Vista at least 100gig to play with. 1/5 of the 500gig is not so bad.

    cheers ...

jup, i would go for around 70GB if i would partition. people know, i wouldn't. so no need to bother about thinking for a good size for me.

but just make it really big enough. it may be annoying if it isn't big enough one day.

100gig for OS and apps? why not? Give it more room to breath. I personally prefer "no" partitions on my Vista machines, but when needed to be, at least 100gig to cover the OS and the apps.

I saw many instances where even 80gig OS partition from manufacturers were quickly running out of space, in percentage calculation.

    cheers ...

the less space you have free, the faster the remaining space gets fragmented, the more often you need to defragment.

and there will be the day where c: or d: will not have enough space, and then you have to rejuggle your stuff to get on.

so only more than big enough is .. big enough.. :)
