So, I want to re-partition my hard drive, in a way that the built-in one is unable to accomplish. I'm running Vista 64-bit, so, my software choices are rather limited.

I was thinking of using gParted. If people have experience with this program, please tell me what you thought of it. I'd also like to hear alternatives.

Also, I don't really have many options when it comes with how to boot. I used the last of my blank CD-Rs to create a Vista recovery disc, so all I have left is...my external hard drive, which already has a lot of stuff inside it that I don't want to load into my laptop.

gParted has a USB version of their software, but I'm not exactly sure how to use it with my external hard drive. The main problem I can think of is that the computer won't know what file to boot from.

Or am I overthinking this? Do I simply have to load in gParted into the external and then tell my laptop to boot from the USB drive? And it'll magically know what to do from there?

You can set which device to boot from in the bios, like hdd, cd-rom, usb etc. I have never used gparted tho, so can't give you advice there.

And normally the built-in partition tool of vista is pretty effective. It won't be able to partition if it cannot get the space you need on your hdd. Did you do a defrag of your hdd before trying it? This might help if not.

I did do a defrag of the system already. But the built-in partitioner is unable to take space from one drive and reallocate it into another.

I realize I can set the booting option to go to USB, but will it know what file to boot from? The external I have is already loaded with a lot of other data.

EASEUS's trial edition doesn't come with enough gear, it seems.
Acronis Disk Director looks great. Might give it a shot.

But the one question still remains...If I am to make my laptop boot from my external, will it know to run the partitioning program? And if not, is it possible to specify the files to boot from?
