I have installed Outlook 2007 on my new laptop using Vista. I receive messages ok but can only send (or reply) to users with same domain name as me, e.g. can't send to my/others' hotmail and web accounts. I get the following message:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

    Subject: Test
    Sent: 08/04/2007 10:17

The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:

'[recipient's name from my contacts]' on 08/04/2007 10:12
    554 <[person's email address]>: Relay access denied

Help and other forums said to change the SMTP settings, so I tried changing and testing them several times. At the moment they are set to: "My Outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication; Log onto incoming mail server before sending mail." This works with the "Test Account Settings" test message, but I am still unable to send messages to anyone else.

I have also tried the setting: "My Outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication; Logon using [user name and password]; require secure password authentication" but when I try to "Test Account Settings" I get an error message = "outgoing SMTP e-mail server has reported an internal error"

    Any suggestions?

Contact your host - they may require you to send email through their SMTP server.

That is not the issue here. If that was the case he wouldn't make a connection at all. Make sure you are using the correct username and password for the server. The error indicates that either your username and password are incorrect or you are not authenticating at all.

If my username and password were incorrect, then wouldn't it mean I would not be able to send or receive mail at all?

At the moment I can receive email from anyone from any address, and I can send mail to other people with the same domain name.

Incorrect assumption, shinji. A host can require that their SMTP be used to send outgoing mail for domains other than the host domain, or that the exact email address/login be used for outgoing emails. That's why it is important to consult with the host/ISP.

Shopper, for more help, you should google for "554 relay access denied". There are tons of results from that search.

Yes. I understand that. In fact 100% of all isps will require that you use their server when doing a connection on port 25. However when this occurs you simply get a timeout when attempting to connect to another server. The point is that he is actually establishing a connection so his ISP is not blocking the connection at all.

Just a note here. I work for Embarq and therefore deal with this issue alot. You are speaking with an Embarq DSL technician. Please point to a page to backup your information.

EDIT: On another note. You can usually work around this by using port 576 which is the alternate SMTP port if available or if they have SSL connections as an option you can connect on port 993 and the ISP will not block the 3rd party SMTP server. ;)

My recommendation here. Remove the profile from outlook and re-enter all information.

No, 100% of ISPs do not require customers to use their SMTP when connecting on port 25. I send mail through my domain webserver without using my ISP's SMTP.

The email client has nothing to do with this error. Since the host is rejecting the emails, this is a host issue, plain and simple. The advice we give is pretty much useless, since neither of us work for that ISP. It's even more difficult to help since the ISP hasn't been identified, so we are both shooting blind.

I did actually do the google search to start with (as well as searching MS Help and knowledgebase), which is why I gave up and turned to this forum. It seems a lot of people are having similar problems - most of them I think to do with Outlook 2003 rather than 2007 - but after trying the solutions offered (e.g. changing the SMTP settings), had found no answers that seemed to work for me. I found this forum helpful and focused in the past and thought there might be somebody here who could help tell me if there were settings I could change before the tech guy gets back from Easter break.

Well you may still want to try redoing the profile by deleting it then re-entering the information needed. Sometimes the profiles get corrupted. It has worked for me in the past even when all the settings check out.

Thanks for your help shinji: I have tried deleting and recreating the email account: it didn't seem to work the first time but it did the second time. I like simple!

Relay access denied means that it thinks you're sending mail from another domain (such as from [email protected]) through their servers ( your_isp.com ), and as that's a very common way for spam to be spread, they disallow it. They also don't allow non-customers to send mail through their servers. So that's probably where you were running into your problems. As to why re-creating the email account worked, I don't know. You must have changed one of the settings on the second re-creation, because email is a very regular, well understood protocol that isn't prone to "random" errors like most of Windows is.

That may be the case but I know of several cases where an email profile in a program just get corrupted for unknown reasons. I have had this happen in Outlook Express, Outlook 2000 - 2003, and Incredimail XE. In all cases removing the old profile and created a new one from scratch corrected the issue. Just a note that if all else fails then try starting over from square one.

I am having the above mentioned same problems and delting and recreating the profile from scratch does not solve the problem for me. Any fresh suggestions from anyone? Hassled completely.

Well, I think Shinji's solution of just deleting and recreating the profile works somehow. After I did the delete/recreate twice, it has started working. Only logic would be that email solution providers dont activate a new profile that fast.

I've been having the same problem (Relay Access Denied) but only when Replying to an email. Send/Receive works fine at all times. (Outlook 2003/Vista and XP boxes/SMTP Authentication is set).
