And Opera 11.0 is live, with browsing speed enhancements, usability and security improvements, tab stacking, and extensions! The devs sure delivered on their before-Christmas promise :)

Opera has always intrigued me. I need adblock though at the very least to get me thinking of switching from Firefox. I looked into the extension for Opera and it seems like a complicated install needing you to deal with code and such. Weird. Oh well, maybe version 12. :p

Thanks Midnight i'll give it a try but I suspect this version will have problems with how it handles Flash. I really like Opera including the design of the browser but this one issue has relegated the browser to last for me. I'll use Chrome, FF and IE before Opera.

    Will try it though.

What makes you say the extension install requires the user to deal with code? I've not seen anything like this.

It seems reviewers are having trouble getting it to work with the 11 final release so the developers should be on that as we speak, but installing it is the same as an extension for Chrome or FF. Just hit install.

I'm hoping the flash issues from 10.63 have been fixed. Although a rare thing for me, this is the browser's only real downside but it has enough competition and evolution that it should have been a priority for this release. We'll see..

I've ditched FF for Iron, it and Opera (installing 11 now) are both amazing.

EDIT: Just wanted to add, I uninstalled 10.63 and installed 11. All my bookmarks, site preferences, appearance and program settings are preserved. No configuring at all needed to be done from upgrading to 11. Nice!

Edit 2: Adblock plugin doesn't work for me either. Hmm..

    ^^That sucks... :(

I've never used FF4 but I read about how it has increased in size and 'sold out', as its put to the advert companies with tracking data similar to Chrome. FF 3.63 was slooow for me compared to Opera so I have no reason to go back.

If Chromium handled downloads like Opera and had more user adjustability, I'd use it full time. Chromium based browsers are super fast though..

Tell me about it. They fixed it with 10.5 and had no issues until I went to 10.63, now I can't even get into Yahoo mail without having to go into Classic mode. Some pages just revert to an infinite loop on several websites.

It's too bad really because Opera is very quick, great layout, nice features but the way Opera handles Flash keeps this browser down.

The only website that has never worked properly in Opera is Amazon.com's Lightning Deals, it says browser is not supported but it works in FF, IE and Chrome.

Strange. Amazon Lightning deals works fine for me, (I don't use Yahoo) and so does Gmail. I've only just started using Opera in the 10.6 generation so I don't know what it's like back in the seemingly good ol days of 10.5. The sites I'd have problems with are Newegg's checkout system, the BS job application systems that box stores use (Target, Lowes, etc.) and here on NBR. I've only tried the forums here so far, don't feel like giving any more effort to those p.o.s. Kronos programs than I already have.

On NBR, if I'm not logged in (new session) and I click 'reply', I'm taken to the login screen. I enter username & pw, "Thank you for Logging in" comes up but then I'm taken back to the login screen again. To post, I need to login through the top right user acct area, not through the shortcut links in other posts. It didn't always do this, when I first switched to Opera from FF it was fine. I think it was the 10.63 update that messed things up for me. Friggin annoying since this is really the only forum I'm on.

Regarding adblock, there's something about setting an option or something, can't remember, but it look similar to about:config in Firefox. I just don't want to have to deal with that. Then again I change a lot of performance settings in Firefox in about:config so maybe I'm being mean to Opera.

Well, when adblock for Opera works, I will give it a shot. I'm sure they will update/fix the extension too.

    Edit:
Using Opera right now actually. Got all my bookmarks and stuff sorted. Still a lot of things I prefer in Firefox, but it's pretty nice. I prefer it over Chrome, I will say that. Seems to be just as fast as chrome but no as bare. Seems to be a touch faster than FF. I'll keep it installed and when I can get adblock...since that's really the only extension I use with firefox that's not appearance based, I may switch...we'll see how it goes. But i'm going to give Opera a shot.

    Edit 2:
I just can't. I can't do it. I uninstalled it and removed all traces. This is about the 5th time I do it to Opera going back 10+ years. lol. I always say man this looks great and everything but then five minutes later... just something about it bugs the heck out of me. I guess I prefer Chrome over Opera, since that's still installed and has been for a while. It's a decent barebones alternative to Firefox that's useful in some scenarios.

Well good for you for giving it a shot and checking things out for yourself! I've done the same with Firefox a few times and as you say, I just can't do it. Not when Iron (Chrome) is around which is so much faster (for me, noticeably more than even Opera), less invasive, and is just a better 'browsing experience', to be cheesy about it.

Amazon Lightning Deals gives me this: "Sorry, this browser is not supported by our Lightning Deals widget." and strange because I have no issues with Newegg checkout. Strange everyone has a different experience with Opera. I will check into Chrome Iron, first i've heard of it.

You can configure Opera to disguise as Firefox or MSIE on that particular website. Perhaps this is just a retarded browser switch "programmed" by retarded "webdesigners" that can be overridden this way.

To get the NoAds extension working in Opera, you need to enable userscript data preservation, through a simple opera:config change.

Just copy this into your address bar:
    Code:
    opera:config#PersistentStorage|UserJSStorageQuota
And type in a number greater than 500 for that setting, and press Save. That should do it!

Or, you could use the Adsweep addon (based on the previous Adsweep userscript, which I've been using in Opera for the last few versions). In my opinion, it works a bit better than NoAds.

What's wrong with how Opera handles Flash? Actually, on the topic of Flash, there's now a way to get Opera to run Flash only on demand, to save battery by preventing unnecessary Flash apps from running: press Ctrl + F12, go to the Advanced tab, and check the box "Enable plug-ins only on demand." Then, you'll see a big grey play button whenever there is a Flash app on the page, and you can press the button if you want to run the app.

Amazon's had some issues with Opera for a while. The best way around this is probably to set Opera to Mask as Firefox (mask as IE gives some page anomalies, the last time I tried).

Google Chrome and SRware Iron are two different browsers by companies that are not connected at all, but both based off Chromium source code. Iron is just without the privacy issues that Chrome brings to the table.

I got rid of Adblock for Opera. Adsweep is working very well with 11 so far and does not need any about:config settings changed. I prefer to not store anything out of that session's RAM.

Then uninstall that extension? Smooth scrolling with that extension is a known issue (you can disable smooth scrolling in the Settings if you wish). Besides, if you're on a Windows machine, you should probably edit ClearType settings instead of using this extension.

I've been giving Opera 11.0 a try for the past few days and so far it's pretty awesome:
+ 50% faster than Firefox on my Asus EEE. Also, doesn't eat CPU randomly like Firefox 3, which eats up between 5 and 25% of the CPU all the time.
+ love how you can enable Flash and other plugins only on demand (Ctrl+F12, Advanced, Content)

But there are some little Firefox features that I miss:
    1. open new tabs near the current tab, not at the end of the tab list. It's logical that a tab opened from another is related to it; so open it near its parent tab
    2. ability to move a tab into a new window. Very useful when you have a chat window where you're waiting for someone to respond, and you want to move it outside the browser window, so it's always visible
    3. in a table, Firefox lets me select a column of a table by dragging with the mouse while I press Ctrl
    4. F3 to search again for the last searched string. Very useful when you keep opening new windows (such as product details) and need to search for some text (such as a product spec)
    5. Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn to move among tabs
    6. ability to rearrange search engines from the Preferences UI. I want Google to be first and Wikipedia second.
    7. ability to copy a word to clipboard after double-clicking it and pressing Ctrl+C. Right now, double clicking selects the word and pops up the context menu, but pressing Ctrl+C does nothing (probably because the context menu is active)

Finally, ad blocking seems really poorly done in Opera. NoAds has only 3/5 stars, and AdSweep doesn't block the downloading of ads but just hides them. AdBlockPlus remains unparalleled.

UPDATE: I posted this on the Opera forums hoping for more answers (none here so far).
