Open Office really needs to get a Microsoft Office 2007 interface.

Microsoft allows companies to use a ribbon-like interface (Office 2007) for applications that do not compete with Office. In the case of Open Office, it would be too risky and OpenOffice would look bad because it would look like it's always trying to catchup to Microsoft rather than beating it.

Looking forward on the release verson, I hate MS Office for that they always ask you to put in the disk as well as the annoying hot fix and updates.

There's one feature I can remember in OO that worked better than in MS office - handling hyperlinks...

I think (and you may be different) OO is not yet a professional SF. Graphics aliasing, lack of a reference manager like EndNote are just the beginning of the issue list.

Look at Inkscape vs Illustrator - a perfect example when open source did not merely mimic the marketed SF and won the battle in quite a few areas (I have recent Illustrator CS3 and Inkscape, but use Inkscape 90% of the time - it is that good.)

Until OO remains an advanced notepad with all the office infrastructure simply absent - yes, they will keep trying to catchup to Microsoft rather than beating it.

I think it depends on your needs. If you're a heavy Office user and need the special features, then by all means get office. I just type the occasional review, letter or do a simple spreadsheets. For that OpenOffice is more than enough. The nice thing about version three is it can open .docx files which older versions cannot.

OO is getting much better, with the 3.0 release they will finally have the ability to put custom error bar values in graphs (must if your taking a science class like physics). It was the main reason I stayed away from OO.

Now they just need to make it more snappy and loose the java stuff

I have no quarrels with OO, but I am a college student so I got Microsoft Office Enterprise for free. I have since then adjusted to the new interface. I'm liking it.

I really don't understand. I tried 07 Office out extensively and HATE the new facelift with ribbons. I tried to make myself like it but, in the end, moved back to my Office Standard.

    Am I the only one?

Guess I finally found somehwere that my age is starting to show.

I regularly worked for a school year with Word and Powerpoint in Office 2007, and they're definitely problematic. The new interface is distracting, oversized and takes more clicks to accomplish simple tasks compared to Office XP and 2003. The only advantage is that features previously hidden in submenus are easier to find and use. Powerpoint works much better with the new interface because now it doesn't feel like using a product featured for mid-90s expectations. Word has few tangible benefits for a more frustrating interface.

I'm switching to OpenOffice since I am now graduating and can't legally use my copy of Office XP anymore. I really hope that new versions of OpenOffice don't try to mimic the new direction of MS Office 2007.

You're not alone, but I haven't moved back to 2003, mainly because I bought a copy of Office 2007 Ultimate from theultimatesteal for like $60.

I'm starting to know Word, but Excel I'm still lost half of the time.

There is a big BUT (no pun intended): Once you know your way through, I find that it's quicker to use than traditional menus.

You should try the Search Commands add-on. It was previously an internal tool at Microsoft to help people find what they needed on the ribbon. Now, due to popular demand, Office Labs made it available to everyone.
