Alright folks, i'll give you a little challenge. I bought an ASUS G2S. It came with Vista HP, which i simply cannot use for my games and video editing software. Installing XP, however, has been something more than a breeze. At the moment, i cannot get my video card drivers (for 8600M GT) to install in XP because XP wont see my video card! I suspect this is the fault of lack of drivers for something else (chipset? i have no idea), but i suspect someone here does. Thanks a lot, you guys!

EDIT: i should note that i got my laptop from Gentech PC, which doesnt take returns, so you can see how desperate i am right now :)

You can go online and download drivers for your Asus from the Asus website. Get the video card driver, and install it. Upon reboot, it should see the card. If that doesn't work, re-install all the drivers for the laptop - the ones downloaded from the Asus site.

Of course, be sure to download only XP drivers!

Ooh - sounds like some of that forced obsolescence going around. You mean there were *zero* XP drivers available for this model online at ASUS?

yeah, they had only Vista 32/64 on my laptop model's site. And thanks for finding those drivers, ill try them out right now, although i doubt they'll work because my laptop doesnt even recognize my video card. I think this is because i dont have the drivers for the SLOT that my card is plugged into (is that possible?), so do you know what that slot is? Also, I think the driver link you gave me is for the desktop version of the card, not the 8600M, but i'll try it out anyway. ----- nope, just like all the others, it says Setup could not find any drivers compatible with your hardware. Thanks for the try though!

I'm going to go out on a limb, I think it is possible there might not be XP drivers for your notebook and that card because they may have never supported XP. If This is true maybe you can look for hacks, or hit or miss with similar configed with same card and XP drivers will it work? Don't know. Good luck.

For the 8600M, you may try looking at www.laptopvideo2go.com and getting their recommended driver distribution. It's what I use for my 7600 under XP, the 8600 should be in a similar boat under XP.

XP sees your video card fine. You wouldn't see anything when booting into Windows otherwise. What it's currently doing is using the VESA drivers for the video though, which are basically bog-standard drivers, no acceleration for anything. Good luck :)

Thats what i think isnt happening. In XP's device manager, there is no display adapter, and when i go to display settings, the computer is using VgaSave, the backup display adapter. Therefore, my concern is that i do not have the proper drivers for the SLOT that the 8600M plugs into, and i was wondering if that would resolve the issue. And yeah, i've tried tons of LV2G's drivers to no avail. Thanks though!

Ahhhh, right then. Your newbie title threw me ;) That info helps... try looking here for XP drivers for the Intel 965 PM, not the GM, as the GM has the integrated graphics, which you obviously don't have. You shouldn't need the Matrix storage driver.
