I bought my Vaio Z with the 2007 Microsoft Office Home & Student, and successfully upgraded it (for free) on my laptop when the time came. I also have a desktop on which I'm currently running Open Office where I'd also like to install 2010 Microsoft Office - I believe I read somewhere that Home and Student can be installed on up to three computers. The thing is, though I have the keys and everything, I don't actually have the software on a disk and can't find where I can download it from. Help?

If it's an OEM version, it is restricted to the machine it was initially installed on. Only retail versions allow multiple installs.
(Which is why the OEMs pay almost nothing for the software -- the idea is to get the user hooked so he then buys a full version for other machines.)

Anyhow, I don't recommend Office 2010 on the Z. The reason is the "ribbon", which is even worse than in 2007, and now takes up around a third of the screen real estate. Combined with the new space craving side bars, Outlook 2010 is pretty much unusable on the Z, unless you only get SMS sized e-mails. I upgraded my Office 2010 to Office 2003.

Press ctrl+f1 to hide the ribbon when not using it.

Home and Student doesn't have Outlook anyway. Anyway, yeah, the ribbon is configurable and hideable. I haven't used it yet, but definitely expect to later and it looks much nicer and more usable than OpenOffice.

KBS, I have the trial installed on my desktop right now, but I can't find anywhere to input it. The trial version seems to be somewhat different in that it knows it's a trial version - I didn't have it asking for me to input any keys or other information, and I can't find the inputs anywhere else in the actual options menu of Office. Aand.. how would I know if it's an OEM? I wouldn't expect it to be, since Sony still charges up to $400 for the Office software to come installed.

EDIT: I checked the "Certificate of Authenticity" and it says... (OEM). Crap. So... there's no way to get a legitimate copy for my 2nd computer?

I have a related question. I bought Office 2007 (Home and Student) Retail with the free upgrade. After Office 2010 was released, I went through the upgrade which involved downloading the installer. The product key was emailed to me by Microsoft. I installed with no problems and everything is fine.

But I can install the Office on 3 machines (since it is Retail). Can I use the same product key that MS emailed me, or, do I install and then ask for frsh activation online? And, do I use the installer or first install using the media and then follow what I did in the first instance?

And... another question. Assuming OEM means I can't have it on both computers, would it be possible to change the installation computer? So I can install it on another computer as a "gift" and justify buying a proper one from Microsoft?
