    I don't like Notepad. Not pretty enough for me. I get bored with it. You see, I have File, Edit, and Format. Pretty boring, huh?

    So I figured, hey, NBR will know something about how to fix my problem.

    So, what do you use?

    Word? OpenOffice?

    Do you mean like an editor for programming?

    Well I have Open Office and Abiword.

    but something like a true Notepad replacement, ya know?

    And now that you mention it: the editor for programming would indeed come in handy :)

    Notepad++ by FAR.

    One of the very first things I install on any system.

    If you like a more slimmed down version, try out Notepad2. I used to use NP2, but the lack of features (such as syntax highlighting) forced me to find something a bit more filling.

    I use Notepad++. http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

    It is very fast, has tons of great features, and support syntax highlighting for 44 different languages. I didn't actually replace notepad with it becuase it adds right click functionality so I didn't really need to, but I believe there is way to do it.

    I use Notepad2; it's a lot like notepad, but has some handy features like syntax highlighting and find-and-replace. It's a really small/light program too. Here's a guide if you want to actually replace the default notepad.exe file, so that things that normally open in notepad will use notepad2 (or notepad++).

    If you want something a little more feature-rich, Notepad++ is great.

    Edit: heh we all posted the same programs at the same time..
    Notepad2 does have syntax highlighting..

    Yea, I just revisited the site and noticed that. The older version I used before I switched to NP++ didn't have it (I've been using NP++ for a long time now, so it's been a while).

    Textpad is another one that I've used in the past. I use it to compile Java source code for some classes, but it is a good general purpose notepad alternative.

    I've tried many, and I like Notepad++ best. Notepad2 is nice, but it's more limited - although this may not matter to you if you don't use it as a programming editor.

    I have used Context for a notepad replacement. I liked it (I used it for Assembly programming, the context highlighting was good).
