I have been trying to copy some large graphics files from my laptop (120G, 5400rpm) to an external USB drive (500G, 7200rpm) via USB 2.0. Speeds that I have been getting was upto like 10MB/sec at best. I thought this is a bit slow. Is this a normal speed? If not, what do think is the problem?

This is normal speed using USB transfers. USB 2.0 says that it is faster than Firewire if you look at the numbers. However because the way that Firewire works the real time transfer rates are higher than USB 2.0.
