I just got my new Sony Vaio SZ 660 with Vista Business. This is my 2nd vista computer; I returned the first one about 2 months ago. We are running Windows 2003 Server at work, I believe I installed SP1 on it. After I join my laptop to the company domain, I lose the ability to connect to the internet. The icon on the bottom right shows the status of the connection as “identifying.” I gave up on the first laptop and never solved the problem. I thought it was a fluke, but after I joined my second computer and had the exact same problem, I don’t know what to do. FYI, I did a system restore and haven’t joined the domain yet, so I can at least use my laptop at home over the weekend.

I played with every setting I could think of. Even when I bring my computer home and connect to my wireless router, I would get the exact same problem. I did a google search and haven’t found much.

I called our I/T consultant, and he had me run some test and ping various things. I don’t really remember all the details, but he did give me the IP address or was it DNS? to google.com and when I typed that into the address bar, I was able to connect. I remember think that my problem had something to do with DNS, but again, I’m not sure. I do believe that I can access our network drives, do I know that it's partially working correctly.

Has anyone heard of this? I just installed SP1 for vista, hopefully that will prevent this from happening again when I join the domain on Monday.

Hi, I'm sorry I dont understand your first question. I will try to answer though. We use DHCP on the server and we also have remote access via remote desktop.

My laptop is the only one with this problem, but it is also the only one with Vista. We dont use Vista at work.

    Thanks.

I know this is an old thread but was there every any resolution?

I'm having almost the same problem. I have just picked up an XPS 1530 with Vista Ultimate and having problems connecting to the internet.

I'm able to dectect the network fine and connect to it but it just isn't getting the internet. In the little Network and Sharing Center it shows the diagram of the lan working but the internet has a little red cross - clicking it brings up the diagnostic which says it can't fix the problem.

Is there something simple I'm missing here? Not enjoying my first experience with Vista.

I'd like to hear if there are any new updates on this. FYI, I talked with my professional I/T consultant ($$$) and he didnt know either. We are running Win 2003 Server Standard. I'll post more details on this soon.

So are you saying that you were able to ping google.com and received a reply, or you typed in the ip address 64.233.169.147 of the site and were able to connect? When you have the machine at work, can you bring up a command prompt and type in ipconfig /all and post the details.

One trick that works from time to time is to bring up a command prompt, type in ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /flushdns, then ipconfig /renew

Sounds like your machine isnt setup properly.

Go to your TCP/IP settings make sure its all on " Obtain IP/DNS address Automatically". Restart your computer. Assuming DHCP is setup on your server...

My Vista32/64bit works fine on Win2003 server at work.
