    Hi Guys,

I have a frusturating problem. I restarted my m1330 this morning, and the audio stopped working for some bizzare reason. Prior to the restart, everything was fine, and once the system restarted, a red X appears next to the volume icon in the Taskbar in Vista Ultimate. I uninstalled the sigmatel drivers, restarted the system (at which point windows installed default drivers) -- still nothing. I then proceeded to download and reinstall the most recent drivers from Dell, and still nothing. The sound device appears to "working normally" in device manager, and in sound properties, but I don't get any sound.

The volume is not muted. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

From reading around the net, seems like it was a common problem when users upgraded to Vista, but the reinstallation of drivers doesn't seem to work for me.

Here are some of the other things I have tried:

    1. Fully remove and reinstall Sigmatel HD Audio Drivers
    2. Fully remove Sigmatel drivers and install Realtek drivers
    3. Plugged in headphones after steps 1 and 2 to check if they work - they dont.
    3. Test speakers within Dell Diagnostics utility - speakers work fine and so headphones, on both output ports.
    4. Thoroughly scanned for virus/spyware - none found.
    5. System Restored to a point prior to malfunction - still the same problem.

    Any ideas?

this happened to me after vista's auto-update downloaded a driver, but i just re-installed the driver and it worked...

I tried to look through the Windows updates history to see if there was anything I could uninstall. Do you recall which update it was? I am getting really desparate here because I have no idea why this is happening.

    booji:

Have you tried removing the sigmatel controller from device manager and rebooting the system?

Windows should detect the new hardware and install the software.

Let us know if that works!

    Chris B,

Thanks for your reply. I have tried removing the audio controller and rebooting. Unforutnately, that hasn't solved the problem either.

    Thanks!
