I'm open for suggestions for a replacement for Nero 6 for my T61 Vista machine. It needs to make images and do as much as possible as Nero, not to mention it needs to be free. I'm not into HD stuff so it's ok if it is missing that.

I also need a good virtual drive software to replace daemon tools to mount images for installs in Vista.

The only reason I use Nero is because it has Nero Vision Express which converts all my pron videos into VCDs :(

    Can other software do that?

i personally use CDBurnerXP as a replacement for Nero, and it does the job as good as Nero in my opinion

And Magic ISO to extract images

U'll find a link for CDBurnerXP in the Best free software thread, not sure abt magic iso though

I think DVD Flick does this (and it's free), although it takes longer than Nero Vision to encode in my experience.

On the original topic, CD Burner XP is the best Nero alternative imo...

Yap for my opinion too... CDBurner XP is great! I've been using CDburnerXP for more than 2years now... It never let me down. Also, It burns Blu-Ray and HD-DVDs for FREE here, Quick Info from Wikipedia:
"The program supports burning data on CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD as well as burning audio files (WAV, MP3, FLAC, Windows Media Audio, and Ogg Vorbis) in the Red Book format. ISO images can be burnt and created.

CDBurnerXP Pro is freeware. It is closed source because it currently uses some proprietary libraries."

Nero 7 and Nero 8 work with Vista. ImgBurn does too. If you need to read build or burn images, ImgBurn is the ticket.
