Well, I looked in the Nero FAQ but could not find anything regarding this matter, so I thought maybe someone here knows.
    My question(s):

    1. Can Nero rip a DVD that I say... bought from Blockbuster?

    2. If not, are there any legal alternative programs that can?

    3. Would it be able to turn a AVI. file into a file that would be readable by a common DVD player?

    4. Are there any alternatives to Nero?

    5. Is it worth the monies?

no, nero can't rip/copy a copy protected dvd

there are many programs that can, they can be legally purchased, but i'm not sure they are technically legal, except for making your own backup copy

I've used both of these, both with good results

    dvd fab

    1click dvd copy/copy pro

the software contains a decoder, or you have to install one seperately on your pc

one of the most popular programs for converting avi to dvd(and burning) is convertX to dvd

    etc

It transforms from compressed -> uncompressed material.
DVD Shrink worked for me (you can make backup copies and it's free).

Dude, Nero Vision Express, which is a part of Nero can convert ANY video to a DVD. just drag the video u want and itll do the necessary conversion.

You can use CloneDVD to copy DVD movies

A program called AnyDVD will remove any copyright and region code when inserted, so you can then rip a DVD from Blockbusters.

    Although this is called pirating.

And a program called WinAVI video converter will convert .avi files to DVD format, and will even burn it to disc.

I'm surprised that this thread isn't closed yet. I thought ripping commercial DVDs were illegal.

You do it when you want to have the movie on the HDD and don't want to waste space + don't want to keep the DVD inside.

I use Nero 7 Ultra Edition and can't live without it. The best at making your own DVD's from any video file.

I just used BlockBuster as a example.... Whats DVDShrink do? De-encrypts and then compresses it? On its site it mentions Nero... But what does having Nero do with it?
