Alright my retarded roommate had his external hardrive on the edge of his bed and it fell off it....soooo now it ceases to work. it says that the hardrive can not be recognized and needs to be formatted. does anyone know of a recovery program to try to piece together what is not corrupted? we had the second session of Star trek next generation and we must watch it!...along with other things. or does anyone know of a place to mail it off to be recovered by a professional? I do know some places can do that but i dont know where they are and i figure they are expensive.

Sounds like a hardware failure not just a formatting failure since you cant "corrupt" a hard disk from a fall, well unless it was running when it fell and was doing something I guess it could corrupt a part of the drive it was writing but it should still work with a portion being corrupted.

I think the drive is probably dead meat. I would try to format it and see what happens.

If it was incredibly valuable irreplaceable data let this be the first and only time you need to learn the hard way to keep a backup of anything important.

your respond was pointless...i know programs exist where if its a hardware failure or corrupted you can still recover some of the data usually. Also don't talk to me like i am an idiot. I know its its either a hardware failure or corrupted from falling while being in use, which it was in use.

i'll add more later late for an appointment. i'll respond in 4 hours

First off, lose the attitude. Everything ViciousXUSMC told you was true, and he wasn't rude about it. Going over the basics is something that we all need sometimes. Even I have spent 15 minutes trying to figure out why a desktop computer that wasn't plugged in wouldn't turn on.

When a hard drive falls, it is almost never corrupted. What happens is that it breaks. Physically. No software will be able to recover data from that if the read/write arm is broken or bent, or a platter shattered or scratched, all of which are quite common if a drive is in use when it falls. The point is that if you can't format the disk or see it spin up and connect in Windows, you're hosed.

If it does spin up, doesn't emit horrible screeching sounds, and Windows can see it as a hard drive and just can't make sense of the data, then a program like Recuva may help. But I have NEVER seen a 3.5" drive take a dive off a desk/table/bed while being used and survive in any kind of recoverable sense, and I've seen a few of those drives leap.

as i said before it is read by windows but it says its needs to be formatted so it still works to some extend which is why i need a program that can make sense of it. i'll take a look into that program. second i know there are such places you can send a failed drive and they will attempt to recover as much as possible. a buddy of mine was telling me about it a long time ago. he was an IT guy and has done that for his company before. so yes he was wrong in what i am talking about because not all is lost with this drive as i was saying. something on it can be salvaged and i need to know what can be salvaged. so i'll report back what i find out with this program. also do you know where such a place that specializes in data recover?

EDIT:if a read hard is broken it doesn't mean the drive is down. there are people that cna replace the arm and than the drive MAY work again...not guaranteed and i am sure their are ways to extract data off the platers in some special way.

EDIT: also when it falls in use it can be corrupted becuase the arm may damage the plater or data might be entered in some way that ruins the integry of the file system.....rare but its possible.

dude!!! awesome this program looks liek it'll do the trick! I see most of the and its golden. It appears from the drop that the file system was damaged so i am going to attempt to repair it if its got that option other wise i am going to have to search through millions of files to find the ones my roommate needs. This drive is a disaster...even with limiting the file size in search i still shows liek 100s of pages of files lol. it'll take a long time but i'll be able to save most of the drive. You are the best. this program is going in my essential program folder to pass on to friends and family.

EDIT: its working and everything i need appears to recover 100% ^^ so like i said its possible too recover. its the file system that appears to have been corrupted in the fall.

If that doesn't work, try Pandora File Recovery.

You got lucky that the drive wasn't permanently damaged. I wouldn't use it again for anything even remotely important, as you don't know what types of residual effects this might have caused, and it could be ready to fail completely at any moment.

i am currently running a thorough stability test with HD tune to check its integrity but i would definitely concur

EDIT error scan is still running but smart says the drive is in good health but i still am not taking chances
