I recently downloaded a foreign film that is in a langauge that I don't understand. I also managed to get a separate .srt file with subtitles in English for the movie, but I don't know how to get the movie file and the subtitle file to play at the same time so I can read/watch.

So my question is, how do I get subtitles to show up on my movie if I have a separate (.srt) file with an .avi file?

Try getting Video Lan player, aka VLan, it's an OS program which is a pretty amazing player.

http://www.bsplayer.org/ this is my favorite player, supports a wide range of video, external subtitles... and the best part its totally free. with no ads or anything.
the basic edition has everything you need with no options disabled and its unlimited use, but the pro edition includes support for subtitle editing and capture. *not worth da money since you can get them separate for free*

OK. I have VideoLan and love it. But how do you get it to play subtitles. That is, the .sub file that's not embedded with the avi?

ALSO! I checked out bs player and it's got spyware/tracking software on it. This extra piece of software MUST be downloaded and installed for the free version to work! Am I missing something?

The reason I resurrected this thread is that I too am looking for software that will play the .sub file from a movie I downloaded.

In VLC,have you tried going to File-Open File. In the File Tab Browse for the Video file and click okay . Then check mark subtitles and click setting and browse for the sub file and add it and click okay.

Hey thanks. I did see that after my first post. But it won't play the .sub file. Maybe that's associated with a particular program.

do you have an idx file that came with the sub? try opening that and not the sub file. The sub only contains the bitmaps and the idx the time stamps.

*edit* also if you are using VLC you sometimes need to not only open the idx file along with the avi but also select the subtitle from the menu and turn it on so it is displayed.

I recommend you to go to subscene.com and find your subtitles there. Those are working with vlc etc.
If you have .idx file too then you'd have to use SubRip to make a text subtitles file out of the pictured one.
BTW How big is your .sub file?

VLC can play sub/idx files just fine. No need to change it.
