I have XP Professional Retail version bought over a year ago - Can I purchase the Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional for $49 and $99 respectively?

    Thanks!

^^ that's the answer I have been looking for. I did the same thing with Vista and wasn't sure if it will work with windows 7.
    Thanks.

So you mean to tell me, you can purchase an XP Home or Professional (OEM or Professional) CD now on ebay for $50-$100, then use that license to get Windows 7 for $49(home premium) or $99(professional) respectively?

It almost doesn't seem fair to those who bought Vista for the full retail price--

And what about those who had OEM preinstalled(and activated) in their laptops who would like to use that license on a newer, but no OS preinstalled? (I know the the typical OEM answer to this one, but want a clarification).

No, that is not what I am telling you at all. Review my previous posts, and the original Vista upgrade instructions provided by Paul Thurrott.

OEM operating systems are tied to the original machine, as has been discussed many, many times. I won't comment on the "is it ok to use it somewhere else" question, since it is not related to the W7 upgrade question (also, I've commented on this plenty of times before).

Im not interested in the Vista upgrade plan--

    I have XP--

The upgrade youve been talking about is installing the software.

What I don't want to happen is I purchase the Windows 7 upgrade for my Retail XP Pro, only to find out that it wont work---

Sigh. You can do a complete install with upgrade media. Since you can do a complete install with upgrade media, you don't have to buy a previous operating system at all. Again, if you review the Vista upgrade instructions provided by Paul Thurrott, and review my other posts (links are in there that explain the same Vista upgrade process works for W7), you'll see exactly why you don't need to own Vista (or any other operating system) to use the W7 upgrade disc.

thanks for clearing that up, I was going to ask about that. I knew it was possible with vista, but wasn't sure about win7. :)

Do you know if these $49 and $99 upgrade dvd's are OEM or retail disks?
