    hey guys,

i needed to reformat my external HDD to FAT32 so that my PS3 can read it. i was wondering if u guys knew any safe programs that could do this. preferably with the least headaches. i don't really need the data that's on the HDD, so that's not really important. i just need to get my PS3 to be able to read/detect it, so i can backup my gran turismo 5 file.

If you don't need the data, can't you just use the Windows Explorer Format? I just looked and FAT-32 is an option there...

Depending on the size of your hard drive, just keep in mind that:

Maximum FAT32 volume size is 32 GB (This is due to the Windows 2000 format utility. The maximum volume size that Windows 98 can create is 127.53 GB).

Get GPARTED.. a partition editor that can format a partition to almost every format. You burn it onto a CD and run it :)

You should be able to. Right-click 'My Computer' and click Manage. From there, go to Disk Management and you should be able to repartition from there, but be careful. Make sure that you that you are making changes to the right hard-drive. (I'm serious! and I'm speaking from experience. :( )

You will probably have to delete the partition/volume that is currently on the drive first.

    Hi,

Microsoft crippled the format utility by purpose, so you need a 3rd party tool in order to format your drive in FAT32. My personal favourite is H2format ( Download bei heise). It's a commandline tool with german and (IIRC) english interface.
Please note, you need to delete existing partitions on your HDD and create an unformatted partition before you can run this tool. This is by design.

Other options: In case you have an external HDD from WD, Seagate, Samsung, there is a good chance these manufacturers offer formatting utilities either.

man i tried that. i right clicked my computer and went to disk management. right clicked my external HDD and tried to click format. but that option didn't do anything, so i tried to delete disk 1 (which was what my external HDD was labeled under) and now it's not listed as one of the active devices. there is so much mixed information on this matter...just lookin at this thread will tell u how confusing this whole matter has been for me. some say u can, some say u can't, and then some say u need a program...

what do i do to recover the drive? it's not being detected by my computer anymore.

'disk 1' used to be my seagate external HDD.

Disk 1 is what you need to create the FAT32 partition on now. You're looking at exactly what you want. The drive is detected by your computer, just not given a drive letter because it has no filesystem or partitions.

Just right-click on it from the disk manager and create your FAT32 partition.

There is a programm that has the same title as your topic - NTFS to FAT32 Converter. Especially, if you don't need to save everything, that we'll go. You need just to google. :)

I'd rather create a partition without formatting since Windows format tool is crippled to not format partitions larger than 32 GB in FAT32.
Next step would be formatting that partition using a 3rd party tool.

For this kind of things, Easus Partition Manager is quite efficient and it is free.

I created a 120gb FAT32 partition on an external HDD yesterday with it (to transfer files from a PC to a Mac), so I'm pretty sure it works. ;)

Partition Magic was the last tool I used for this without errors!! Make sure everything is decompressed or decrypted before conversion and files over 4GB will not work so copy them away.

PS You will love your new SSD!!! WOOHOO!
