I have an external drive that shows up in Explorer, but can't be read (error message 'drive or directory corrupt'). Some of that $50 to $100 recovery software can read it but wants me to pay the $$$ to actually recover it. Any easy and no to low cost ideas out there???

Try a bootable Linux disc? It'll take a bit more work on your part, but you can probably recover with it.

I personally think its wise to invest on a NTFS recovery software.

I got this program call Restorer 2000 in 2001 and I've been using it since.

If you think $50 - $100 for a recovery software is too expensive, then obviously the data is not that important to you.

I've used "Recover My Files"...$70...recovered 3.5 GB (2,437 files) worth of data with everything intact. I accidentally quick formated my data drives; never work on partitions when you're tired!

Anyway, I've never regretted getting that software. Check it out.

Why should he pay if a free Linux disc will recover it for him? It's my primary tool, and I have recovered hundreds of gigs of data for people. You need to get off your high horse.
