this came as a fairly big surprise to me...

the slideshow of the default pictures in vista (32x home premium) was lagging a lot, especially so in some themes (like spin)..

This is not what i expected frm my m1530 (3GB ram, 8600m gt - 256MB).

Vista with aero works perfectly okay otherwise, apart frm the occasional glitches that are inevitable.

    any suggestions?...

It might be disk access from indexing and other processes. How long have you had the notebook up and running. Vista performs a little slower right away, and sort of improves as it ages.

It might also be the drivers, or something working the hdd in the background.
Check if the hdd activity led blinks constantly, and wait till it's done.

jus checked again, computer's as idle as it could be.. still lagging! tho everything else is quick... i wonder if its jus a glitch in the slideshow program.. not handled well? jus try the "spin" theme when u run a slide show.. does it lag for you all too?

I'm assuming it is the slide show feature that comes with Windows picture gallery program. Yeah, I'm not sure what it is with your computer. I have Firefox, Outlook, Word, Powerpoint, and Media player opened and I ran through the slideshow just fine. Heck, I was even Folding@Home in the background. The best I can think of is did you change the settings on the slideshow to slow?

    WTF!

now i tried running the slideshow (yeah, the windows pic gallery in-built feature) in fast mode, and after lagging twice or thrice, it jus froze!

after an alt+tab, a bubble said display driver nvlddmkm stopped working, and has now recovered....

closed the non responsive slide show using task manager, explorer.exe restarted!

    is my vista possessed??

    UPDATE:
so i installed the 175.12 driver from www.laptopvideo2go.com after trawling through the forums.

i went to the windows gallery and started a slideshow: the increase in performance there was marginal. it STILL lagged, though slighly less in medium setting but as much as before in fast setting.

I am now convinced that this cant be a driver problem either.. had it been so, it would've improved considerably, cuz i upgraded frm the stock driver. and frm what ive heard, theres huge jump.

    what do i do? :(

For Windows slide show, I wouldn't go as far as saying driver "upgrades" will give you HUGE performances upgrades. Does the HD light light up when you turn on the slide show? Is it a consistent loss of frames per second or a loss of FPS at a certain interval?

I ask these questions cause video drivers are not the only piece of software that can zap performance.

You are able to game reliably, correct? If not, it could be a hardware issue with your graphics card. This is especially true if your display driver just stops working while you run that slideshow. Have you scanned for viruses/spyware recently? Is anything eating up your CPU?

i'd say they are intermittent loss of frames... freezes, and starts, freezes a fraction of a second later, starts again.. n so on...

weirdest thing of all is, everything else, bigger than a stupid slideshow, seems to be workin jus fine...

Nope thats what beats me - barring a few occasional glitches, everythin seems fine... ve been gaming, works quite well...

Theres nothing eating up my CPU, ve been careful not to allow any of the ad/spy/malware crap of the net to creep into my lappie... also corroborated by the decent performance of other applications!

okay now its workin without lagging...

frm what i could see there was no process runnin the last few times i tried the slideshow (when it was lagging) and the System Idle Process was takin the max CPU attention.

    wonder what the issue was.
