As the titles says..... Multiple* sorry, typo in the header

Vista crashes sporadically. I have to finish writing this quick because it can occur at any moment now.

-Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed

    -SymCUW has stopped working

-Windows Problem Reporting has stopped working

    -COM Surrogate has stopped working

-Desktop Window Manager stopped working and was closed

Those are some of the programs that pop up sporadically. Soon after Vista crashes. Instead of a Blue/Black SOD its many lines like the LCD was cracked. Anyone face this problem before? Im on a computer that is only less than 3 months old and all of a sudden crashes start to happen.

I assume it was defraggin when I just happen to flip down the monitor to close it for the night. I assume it was scheduled. So I don't know if the clusters where thrown off to cause this?

Anyone have a similar problem that can help me would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

BTW- When I run games it crashes shortly after running or just gives me an error telling me I cant run it. Also when I use a web browser (Firefox) it would sometimes give me an error, close, and ask me to restart. Ill post more errors if they come up. Thanks again.

Doesn't act like a virus. Sometimes upon restarting it would scan disk check because segments were out of place or something. I highly assume it was because I closed my computer during defragmentation to cause this.

Maybe after defragging Windows accidentally messed up some drivers or some important dependencies. I would try to repair Windows first. If that doesn't work, backup as many files as you can off of your hard drive, wipe the drive and reinstall Vista.

Ya thats what I was thinking. Im sure its not a virus, just something with Vista. It happened to me before on a previous laptop but with XP. Gonna buy an external HD and wipe the drive and start fresh.

But if anyone finds out what my problem could be I would greatly appreciate any input.

Memory test and as long as that passes with 0 errors (not even 1 error is acceptable) you can then do a full HDD test and check for bad sectors and then you will probably have to do a clean install.

Sounds like a RAM issue to me. But Qwakrz's method is the way to go once you have backed up all your stuff.

Yep I had a few errors when it did a disk check before Vista loaded up. It would sometimes ask me to go into Safe Mode or start normally. Once in safe mode it never crashed as I ran it for more than 5 hours straight just to test things out. So I knew it wasnt a virus. I cause I shouldnt have closed the monitor when it was defraggin. Dumb move on my part GG...

Anyway, have to go out a buy a external HDD as my stuff would take too long to burn 1 by 1 on several disks. I will then have to do a full clean install which would be fun. Ill let you guys know more when I get things rolling. Thanks for the input and any more suggestions :)
