Just includes a few releases, with an "other" option refering to other releases.
I vote for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000.

My vote goes for Vista. I've had the least amount of BSOD's on it. (only about 2 from OC too high :p)

Vista. Just being rid of those annoying explorer.exe crashes is enough to earn it my vote. Good riddance to those buggers.

Best OS ever was DOS...even though it wasn't a windows, I think computers should still run using DOS. You could do almost anything with it by just typing a command...and on computers today it wouldn't need much resources. I so love how it looks full-screen.

All it needs is a little modification to work with high-graphics games and programs and it would be the perfect OS. Too bad that it ain't used at its fullest anymore :(

If you really like the CLI then you should try Linux, it allows you to use the CLI all you want. ;)

For all people disparage Vista, after a couple of months using it, I haven't had a more stable operating system. XP was a lot less stable, especially a few years back, and Win 98 was a serious pain. It seems a lot of problems other people have with Vista are hardware/driver issues that continue to be worked out. All versions of Windows had those problems early in their cycle. Vista may be bloated and buggy, but it's the best Windows experience I've had yet.

Yeah, I agree. I've had it on at least one machine since November 2006, and it's been incredibly stable at every stop. My main desktop goes weeks without being rebooted.

Of course, I only had Vista on ATI-equipped machines in the early days of Vista. I guess Nvidia had a few more driver problems than ATI initially.

Not a single BSOD in Vista yet, had it for around 2 years now. But there were few instances where I had to restart with the power button because it got stuck (unresponsive). But far more stable compared to XP.

But if all MS windows versions (including server editions) are considered then IMO Windows 2003 server is the most stable ( I haven't used 2008 server, therefore cant comment on that).

same here, a few BSODs with XP (stupid Logitech Fusion webcam anti-echo audio driver conflicts with Dell's ?Sigmatech Audio driver....)

with Vista, never had a BSOD ever, though i do reflash my OS partition with a cloned partition every 6 months to keep things clean :p

    think i'd go with Vista

I voted XP. It's the most stable out of all of them except Vista, which I haven't used enough to have a fair opinion on it.
So Vista might be more stable, I wouldn't know from experience.

Only time I've ever gotten BSODs in XP or Vista is when I've overclocked my hardware too much. But with Vista, I get no more random ntdll.dll or explorer.exe crashes. Thus, Vista gets my vote.

I'm amazed that so many people have voted for XP. Both it and 98 were very temperamental for a long time. I personally voted for 2000. Never had a single problem with it in five years of use. Vista is running fine just now but I'd rather give it more time.

You can use a utility like Acronis True Image to make an image of a partition, much like the restore partitions that vendors include on their systems. The image can be stored on another hard drive, or in the case of Acronis you can create a small partition (called the "secure zone") and store the image there. (If you press F11 at boot, you can boot to that partition and have the option to restore your image.) There are other utilities too. Ghost is another one that comes to mind.

In practice what you'd do is install the OS and get it just how you want it, then create an image of it. When you want to start over, just restore that image, as opposed to installing from scratch.

Some people might like the image to include all of their apps, some might want just the OS and drivers. I prefer just the OS and drivers, as my choice of apps changes constantly.

IMO windows 2000 was and still is the most stable version of windows. I work with 2000 pro & 2000 server everyday, and while the XP computers on the network need constant attention the 6 that are running 2000 are flawless.

Windows 2000 definitely. Never crashed on me. not even once. Was good for business and excellent for running all my apps. not too internet oriented and I liked the stylish design that they used. I still use this on one of my laptops. Simplistic. Hows that phrase go? less is more?

i've had vista on my laptop for a few weeks and i've gotten 2 BSODs already lol. they were both video memory manager errors though... so these BSODs might have been because of my video card overheating a little bit. other than that, i love vista.
