    From the article .....

"While Microsoft is still pushing Vista hard, the company is quietly allowing PC makers to offer a "downgrade" option to buyers that get machines with the new operating system but want to switch to Windows XP.

The program applies only to Windows Vista Business and Ultimate versions, and it is up to PC makers to decide how, if at all, they want to make XP available. Fujitsu has been among the most aggressive, starting last month to include an XP disc in the box with its laptops and tablets. "

    and ...

"There is an issue, though, over how long PC makers can keep selling machines with Windows XP as the preloaded operating system. Microsoft is requiring large PC makers to stop selling XP-based systems as of January 31, though some PC makers would like to sell XP machines for longer."

Windows XP is still the best around. To regain market share from XP, Vista SP1 must have the assurance that it can perform as well as XP. This is the only way that business will move to XP automatically.

However, in the last paragraph I quoted, this is a temporary thing -- MS wants the big suppliers to stop shipping XP at the end of January 08.

Is it? I've heard more than a few people have stability problems with Vista. Both 32- and 64 bit versions.

By contrast, XP is pretty much rock stable at this point.
Vista x64 might one day become more stable than XP, but I don't think today is that day.

As for performance? Depends on how and what you measure. XP still pulls ahead in DX9 games, for example.

I had compatibility problems with 64bit versions of Vista. Most are driver related, such as VMWare Workstation.

I believe the day will come at the arrival of Windows 7.

Yes the stability problem is the big one for Vista.

But Vista 64 kills 32 bit OS for what I do. I am toying with the idea of trying XP64 but that thing has a hideous reputation.
