I recently bought a Vaio SZ and was impressed by its speed. After recieving numerous warnings from windows to install some form of antivirus software i promptly installed McAfee 'Internet Security' i have now noticed a distinct decrease in the speed of my notebook not only for internet tasks but for starup times aswell.
Is there any way of tweaking the settings so that my notebook runs as it did before? (without changing my antivirus software)

short answer...not really. Mcafee and norton scan most files as they are used which ties up a lot of resources. There are many antivirus software programs (free) out there that are less intrusive.

ok thanks for the reply. on a more interesting note in McAfee's 'security center' while browsing through some of the tabs, after clicking on the 'privacy service' tab i got a blue screen with white writing which seemed to resemble a blue screen of death. didn't get a chance to read the text as the computer rebooted itself straight away. How peculiar/scary.

Try nod32, Windows Task Manager is showing it's currently using 20MB of memory and 9 seconds of CPU usage since XP boot 3 hours ago (with all features except Internet Monitor enabled).

Windows OneCare live is excellent, similar interface to McAffe but it works better keeping more viruses out, mcaffe can not remove memory viruses and onecare live can. It is installed as more of an integrated system file so it does not slow down your startup or running times at all IMO.

This is the exact reason that I ditched McAfee even though I had a free subscription. I use AVG Free edition now, haven't had any issues and the system runs a lot faster.

But you will notice your system is faster again! Aint that worth it?! Dont forget the other programs like Zonealarm, Ad-Aware, Spybot and Spyware Blaster when you remove McAfee.

yeh, i suppose i'd rather have a fast system and feel like i've chucked away £30 than have a slow system and feel like i've chucked away £1300

i've registered the software under my name though, surely the same serial won't work on another PC now?
